Si Gabriel Sonnier dead: What happened?

An 18-year-old was died in a single-vehicle crash in Beauregard Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Officers responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of LA Hwy 112 and LA Hwy 1146 in Beauregard Parish at 9:45 a.m. on Monday. Officials said that the crash killed 18-year-old Si Gabriel Sonnier of Port Barre.

The driver of a 2015 Freightliner utility truck was going west on LA 112 when he overcorrected, crossed the opposite lane of travel, and crashed, leading Sonnier to be ejected from the vehicle.

According to investigators, Sonnier, who was unrestrained, sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the site. The driver was securely strapped and had only minor injuries. He was sent to a hospital in the region for treatment.

A toxicological sample was acquired from the driver and will be analyzed.

This crash is still being investigated.

Unrestrained Passenger Ejected and Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash
DeRidder – On August 28, 2023, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of LA Hwy 112 and LA Hwy 1146 in Beauregard Parish. The crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Si Gabriel Sonnier of Port Barre.
The initial investigation revealed the driver of a 2015 Freightliner utility truck (bucket truck), was traveling west on LA 112. As the utility truck approached the intersection, it drifted off the right edge of the roadway. The driver overcorrected, traveled across the opposing lane of travel and overturned which caused Sonnier to be ejected from the vehicle.
Sonnier, who was not properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was properly restrained and sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment. A toxicology sample was obtained from the driver and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Gabriel Sonnier’s death has surely had a tremendous impact on the community of Port Barre and beyond. When a young life is lost in a sad accident, the repercussions are felt not just by family and friends, but also by neighbors, classmates, teachers, and anybody who had the privilege of knowing him.

In 2023, Troop D investigated 20 fatal crashes that resulted in 22 deaths.
