Who was Rufaro Machingura?

Rufaro ‘Mafidi’ Machingura was a former Black Rhinos Queens FC and Mighty Warriors player.

The Zimbabwe Mighty Warriors finally broke the long-awaited duck and dispatched South Africa to clinch the Cosafa Women’s Championship at a packed Rufaro yesterday.

It was the free-scoring Mighty Warriors hotshot Rufaro Machingura’s 85th-minute goal that took the stuffing out of Banyana Banyana and made sure the regional crown remains in the country.

Ranganai Tinashe Dzotizei a journalist shared his special moments made by Mafidi, that will remain engraved in football folklore.

When I received the news of the passing of former Mighty Warriors striker Rufaro “Mafidi” Machingura, this came right into my mind. Took me five mins to pluck this special moment made by her that will remain engraved in football folklore. 9 July 2011, a day that represents Zimbabwe’s darkest moment having lost 13 fans in a World Cup qualifier against South Africa in 2001. On this day, the Mighty Warriors, as if by coincidence, were playing their eternal nemesis Banyana Banyana in the final of the Cosafa Women’s Championship. I was writing for the Standard at that time and covered most of the tournament and got the main gig. 85th minute, with possible penalties, looming, Rufaro rose highest and glanced it in. Rufaro must have undergone maintenance work after that. Iv saw wild and raucous celebrations of a goal as I did that day. Zimbabwe won it and this was the back page the next day. My first ever back page story. The only back page moment I’d ever get to now. Thanks to the towering Mafidi. Condolences to her family and the nation. It’s heartbreaking when I look back at this moment. Our golden heroine on the day. Today, she joins other departed queens for a whole kick about in heaven. May her soul rest in peace.
