What happened to Filipino film actor Robert Arevalo?

According to his daughter Anna Ylagan, veteran actor Robert Arevalo, one of the longest-running performers in the Philippine entertainment industry, passed away on August 10, 2023.

Ylagan announced in a Facebook post,

Today is the day that the Lord has chosen to take our dearest Papa home. Robert Francisco Ylagan, a.k.a. Robert Arevalo, peacefully passed away at 10:17 am this morning, Aug. 10, 2023. Praise God for His mercy and grace. We are grateful that He has given us the best Papa one can ever wish for.

Thank you for loving us the way you did, Pa. Although our hearts are broken, we are comforted by God’s promise that He has a place reserved for you in His kingdom in Heaven where all of us who believe in His son, Jesus, will one day reunite.

Papa’s wake will be during the weekend (after his cremation) at Arlington Chapels, Araneta Ave. ‘Solace Rooms 1 & 2’ beginning Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, up to Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023. Thank you for all your expressions of love and sympathy. We are deeply touched and grateful. 💙💙💙

Screen veteran Robert Arevalo has passed away, his family announced on Thursday. He was 85. The family thanked everyone for their support and expressions of sympathy.

As per the family statement, it was confirmed that he passed away peacefully at 10:17 am this morning, Aug. 10, 2023. 

UPDATE: According to Philstar.com, Robert’s cause of death was listed as complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Who was Robert Arevalo?

Arevalo was born on May 6, 1938, into a show business creative family. He is the son of actor and musician Tito Arevalo, the older cousin of noted actor Jay Ilagan, and the nephew of filmmaker and future National Artist for Film Gerardo De Leon.

One of the greatest love stories in local showbiz, his storied marriage to fellow actor Barbara Perez lasted 61 years beginning with their nuptials in Baguio City in 1962.

Arevalo, whose actual last name was Ylagan, comes from a family with a long history in the entertainment industry. Gerardo de Leon, a seasoned filmmaker and National Artist, and Angel Esmeralda, an actor, and director, were uncles of the late Jay Ilagan, Arevalo’s nephew.

His father was the actor Tito Arevalo, who was wed to Guadalupe Francisco Ylagan; his niece was the actress Liberty Ilagan. Conrado Conde, an actor and director, was his uncle.

Robert’s career

The 1950s saw the start of Robert Arevalo’s acting career, and he immediately became well-known as one of the top performers of his period.

He made multiple cinematic appearances and showed his versatility by taking on a variety of roles. His films include “Santiago” (1970), “Sino’ng Pipigil Sa Pagpatak ng Ulan?” (1966), and “Huk sa Bagong Pamumuhay” (1953), among others.

Arevalo experimented with producing and directing in addition to acting. He was the director of various films, including “Katawan” (2011) and “Eva, Sisa, Venus” (2002).

Throughout his lengthy career, he received recognition, honors, and praise for his outstanding contributions to Philippine cinema. A well-known name in both film and television, Robert Arevalo has a long-lasting impact on the entertainment business.

The Mass will be conducted on August 13 at 7 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Chapels, Araneta Ave., “Solace 1 & 2,” as the family had opted to celebrate Robert Arevalo for a couple of days on August 12 & 13.
