In Nashville, Landis established his studio in 2007 under the name Fool on the Hill, where he continues to this day to engineer and produce music
Richard Landis graduated from The High School of Music & Art in 1962 as a member of the class. Bob Glassenberg described him as “one devil of a piano player” in a Billboard article despite the fact that he is an experienced pianist. With Spencer Davis and Peter Jameson, Richard Landis started an acoustic blues group in 1970.
In 1971, the band went on tour with POCO and released It’s Been So Long on Mediarts. The album It’s Been So Long was produced by Jay Sentor, who recognized Landis’ skill and proclaimed his intention to do so.
In an interview with Billboard, he stated that he “planned to cut that heavy piano player in the Davis & Jameson group as a solo performer, backed by a nine-piece band.”
Richard Landis’ solo album Natural Causes was published in 1972 to lukewarm reviews and modest commercial success. Two songs from the album—”A Man Who Sings” and “Natural Causes”—reached their adult contemporary high positions of 35 and 40, respectively.
Landis also received his first credit for a commercial production in 1972. Tenterfield Saddler, Peter Allen’s second album, was produced by him and distributed by Metromedia. Landis also has musical credits on the record.
Richard Landis was appointed West Coast Director, Talent Acquisition for Capitol Records, a Los Angeles-based company, in 1978. Landis previously served in the same capacity as East Coast director in New York City.
Richard Landis served as the VP of A&R at BNA Records in 1992. To stay with Landis, Lorrie Morgan joined BNA after leaving RCA Records. In 1993, Landis quit his role with BNA, but he remained a consultant and continued to produce independently for the label. War Paint, a top 10 album by Lorrie Morgan, was produced by Landis in May 1994. One of the three singles released, “If You Come Back From Heaven” was co-written by him. It debuted at #51 on the Billboard country charts in June 1994.
In Nashville, Loud Recording, a significant recording facility, and Too Loud, an adjacent overdub and mixing studio, were jointly owned by Landis and James Stroud from 1993 until 2000.
For producing Adam Brand’s Hell of a Ride, an album that peaked at #19 on the ARIA Charts, Richard Landis was nominated for the CMAA Album of the Year award in 2010.
