How did Reb Michoel Schnitzler die?

Michael Schnitzler, a well-known performer, composer, and producer who has made significant contributions to the world of Yiddish music has died. He was 62.

This sad news was announced by one of his family members on his social media page and the statement reads,

We welcomed shabbos with the bitter news of the untimely passing of my dear cousin and Rebbe of Jewish Chasidic Music Reb Michoel Schnitzler z”l – Michoel, your music stirred the hearts of many, and you will be remembered forever. 

Many people who knew Michoel were saddened by his sudden demise and expressed their condolences to him and his family.

Who was Reb Michoel Schnitzler?

Michoel Schnitzler was a well-known singer, composer and producer who has made significant contributions to the world of Yiddish music.

He was born in 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. The Tchaba Rav, Harav Shraga Shmuel Schnitzler, zt”l, was the father of Reb Meshulam Zusha. 

Reb Michoel, as a youngster, never imagined himself as a singer. He was the tenth of twelve children, and he spent his early years in Kiryas Yoel. Reb Zisha Schnitzler, Reb Michoel’s father, died in 1977 at the age of 49, when Reb Michoel was a fifteen-year-old bochur.

For more than three decades, Reb Michoel was well known as a singer and performer who was a favorite at gatherings and weddings.

He formed his own record label, MRM Music, which became a lead in the Yiddish music industry. He was known as a pioneer in the genre for fusing classic Yiddish melodies with contemporary techniques in his music.

Throughout his career, Michoel recorded 15 albums with more than 150 songs, with the year 2000 serving as his final release.

Reb Michoel, one of the traditional “old timers” whose niggunim never get old, was a singer with a kind heart, a humble sense of humor, and exceptional gefeel.

Reb Michoel cause of death:

Michoel had just arrived in Airmont after spending Pesach in Eretz Yisroel when he suddenly died.

Reb Michoel died of a heart attack on Friday afternoon in the Monsey area, shortly after returning to New York from Eretz Yisrael. The paramedics immediately arrived on the scene but were unable to save his life. 

The levayah for Reb Michoel will take place on Sunday morning at 10′ O’clock at Har Shalom Cemetery, located at 44 Hillside Avenue in Airmont, NY.

For long decades, the name Reb Michoel Schnitzler was synonymous with amusing and encouraging Yidden with his musical prowess and outstanding middos. Tributes flooded social media after his sudden demise.
