Who was Petr Klima?

Petr Klíma was a Czech professional ice hockey forward. He participated in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, and Detroit Red Wings. Along with two seasons in the Czech league, he also spent a portion of one season with the IHL Cleveland Lumberjacks.

Klima was 20 years old when his Dukla Jihlava team executives learned that the Detroit Red Wings were keen to sign the young star to an NHL contract.

Despite all the attention surrounding him, Czechoslovak hockey authorities made no real effort to crack down and stop Klima from travelling in Europe, despite widespread rumors that the Wings were trying to buy off the country’s authorities to get Klima out of his home country.

Klima was the first Czech player to desert straight to an American club rather than one of the NHL’s Canadian teams, which had in the previous smuggled many Czechs and Slovaks out of Europe. This happened during the summer of 1985 as a consequence of his successful defection.

Klima started discussing the prospect of joining the NHL following the 1984–85 season with the Wings during the 1984 Canada Cup. He even signed a covert multiyear deal with the Red Wings at that time, while in Vancouver with the Czechoslovak club.

Polano had delivered the contract to Klima without the Czechoslovak authorities being aware of it. Klima was lucky that the Red Wings also succeeded in bringing his girlfriend to the United States because he could not speak English when he eventually arrived in Detroit on September 22, 1985.

Klima requested jumper number 85 in honor of his triumphant defection and wore it the whole time he played in the NHL as a memento of the year he attained freedom.

The Red Wings selected Klima in the fifth round (88th overall) in the 1983 NHL Entry Draught. His junior hockey career was spent with the CHZ Litvinov squad.

NHL career

From 1985 through 1989, Klima spent four complete seasons with the Wings before being dealt to the Oilers (along with Joe Murphy, Adam Graves, and Jeff Sharples) in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Kevin McClelland, and a fifth-round selection in the 1991 NHL Entry Draught.

Despite not playing at all in the third period or the first two overtimes of Game 1 of the 1990 Finals against Andy Moog of the Boston Bruins, Klima scored the game-winning goal in the longest Stanley Cup Finals game in history. He was an Oilers player from 1980 until 1993, and he won the Stanley Cup in 1990.

The Lightning acquired Klima in 1993 in return for potential future benefits. Until 1996, Klima spent three seasons with the Lightning. He played with the Lumberjacks, Kings, Penguins, and Oilers during the 1996–97 campaign before being released in 1997. In 1997–1998 he participated in the DEL, and in 1998 he tried to make a comeback with the Red Wings.

He left the NHL in 1999, played two seasons in the Czech league in 2001–2003, and then announced his permanent retirement in 2003. During those two years, he captained and played for Litvinov. Klima responded with the number 85 in honor of the year of his defection and his debut season in the NHL when asked which jersey number he wanted to wear.
