On Tuesday, Nash County sheriff’s officers arrested an elderly woman and accused her of killing her 8-year-old granddaughter.

The charges against Patricia Ann Ricks, 72, of Nashville, North Carolina, include criminal child abuse and first-degree murder. Ricks is being held without bond by the authorities at the Nash County Detention Facility. On Thursday, she will make her first court appearance.

Police said in a statement,

“The 8-year-old juvenile was beaten so severely by the grandmother that she died from the injuries.” 

The victim’s identity will not be made public just yet, according to the sheriff’s office.

What Happened?

Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a young person who had been transported to the emergency department at Nash UNC Healthcare in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, about 50 miles east of Raleigh, with serious injuries and was already dead when they arrived.

The 8-year-old child lived in the 5000 block of Dutchman Road in Nashville, North Carolina, just a few miles from the hospital, according to deputies and detectives from the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived at the hospital right away to look into the death’s cause.

Nash County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement announcing the death of the young girl,

“Based on the investigation, it was determined that the 8-year old juvenile was beaten so severe by the Grandmother that she died from the injuries,” 

“The child had severe injuries throughout her entire body and head.”

The 8-year-old girl resided in the residence with her grandmother, who served as the child’s legal guardian, as well as several other siblings. The surviving siblings of the 8-year-old girl are now under the care of the Nash County Department of Social Services, according to the police, who stated they are currently unaware of any potential motive for the girl’s brutal death. The investigation is still going on.
