Oliver high school shooting: What happened to Derrick Harris?

KDKA, Pittsburgh — On Wednesday morning, according to Pittsburgh police, a student was shot and murdered by another student close to Oliver Citywide Academy’s entrance. Derrick Harris, 15, is the victim, according to the authorities.

The incident took place just before 7:30 a.m., according to Pittsburgh Police Commander Richard Ford, as students were walking to school. After that, they got a ShotSpotter alert for at least 11 shots that were fired.

Police claimed that as they were assisting the victim, they noticed a young person fleeing the scene carrying a gun. After then, he was arrested.

According to Ford, the man was initially in serious condition but was subsequently declared deceased at a nearby hospital.

It’s quite annoying, said Ford. “We put forth a lot of serious effort. With the schools, we collaborated. And that’s what we’ll keep doing. Each time a life is lost, it is tragic. Knowing that there is no danger to the public makes me feel a lot better.

Mayor Ed Gainey also released the following statement on the shooting:

“Pittsburgh, please join me in prayer for the family, friends, and the entire Oliver Citywide Academy community as they are once again mourning a young life taken by gunfire. I’m proud of the quick response by our Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, who were on the scene within minutes and were able to apprehend the suspect. Thank you for your continued work in making Pittsburgh safe.

Who is the suspect?

Jamier Perry was seen fleeing the scene while carrying a gun. He “was taken into custody without further incident and a firearm was recovered,” according to the press release.

Charges facing

He has been detained in the Allegheny County Jail after being charged as an adult with Criminal Homicide, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor, and Firearms Not to be Carried Without a Licence.

According to the police, this arrest marks the third one made in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred outside Oliver Citywide Academy in the previous two months.

According to Pittsburgh Police, Eugene Watson, 18, and Brandon Watson, 17, have been charged as adults with Criminal Homicide, Conspiracy, and Violations of the Uniform Firearms Act for the homicide of 15-year-old Marquis Campbell on January 19, 2022.

Parent Concerned about the shooting

The bus passengers were either driven home or to Manchester School to meet up with their families. There weren’t many pupils there when the incident happened. The son of Armani Turner is a student there.

She expressed her worry that her 13-year-old was okay and expressed regret that the administration had not informed her of the occurrence.

I was relieved once I spoke to him, but I’m still anxious because my son is quite active in sports and other activities, so I get to meet a lot of his friends, she added.

Nobody wants to receive that call, but I simply want to make sure it isn’t someone he might know or someone I might know from classmates.

Turner continued, expressing her concern that the violence will worsen. Turner continued, “I just want this to stop happening so frequently. “I only ask that parents talk to their children.

Know what’s happening and what your child is interested in. And if they require assistance, get it to them so that it doesn’t happen again.

The district eventually decided to cancel the school day, and this week’s classes will be further explained. Wayne Walters, the superintendent, declared that “this student’s safety was compromised today.”

It’s not acceptable. A student was shot and died outside the school in the early part of last year. Police reported that a student had sexually and physically assaulted a staff member in September. The district claimed that it was attempting to identify the cause of the violence.

The future of the school will be discussed, but no specific safety precautions were mentioned during a press conference on Wednesday, according to officials. We are thinking about a lot, Walters remarked. However, we’ll be considering Oliver Citywide Academy’s future.

Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, of Pennsylvania, posted to Twitter on Wednesday morning.

“Just when I tweeted about the Uvalde anniversary, I saw the news of a student shot outside Oliver Academy in Pittsburgh. Another child dead from senseless gun violence. We shouldn’t have to live like this. My office is in touch with local officials and I will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Derrick Harris murder: The grieving community takes action

After a student was shot and murdered at Oliver Citywide, the community is trying to turn its sorrow into action.

After a 15-year-old kid was shot and killed on Wednesday in front of Oliver Citywide Academy, the community is attempting to turn its sorrow into action.

Gabby Cherry, a tenth-grade student at Eden Christian Academy, is urging action. Cherry stated, “This community needs to step up.

Gabby Cherry is calling for action

They need to do something.” Cherry has expressed her concern that she doesn’t feel secure at school. “A lot of kids die a lot, all the time, and it’s devastating because imagine being a parent and your kids are dying,” she said.

It is terrible. The teen, who is 15 years old, shares the same age as the Oliver Citywide Academy teen who was shot and murdered on Wednesday morning.

A teacher’s union representative comments on the shooting death of an Oliver Citywide student, saying, “The trauma is too much.”

Cherry attended Mayor Ed Gainey’s presentation in the Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood as a result of that horrible shooting and the unending gun violence.

City in the Streets, the mayor’s latest program, aims to increase community trust so that crime can be reduced in the long run. Gainey asserted that to keep kids off the streets and out of trouble, parents, schools, the community, and others must all work together.

Gainey stated, “We claim our children. “We assert them. Let’s do everything in our power to save our children.  Coalition Against Violence (CAV) Shayla Holmes is in charge of organizing the peace summit.

She thinks that mental health needs to take the lead. “Pay attention to only positive reinforcement. Because there are alternatives to using force, it is possible to resolve disputes without resorting to force, according to Holmes.

Cherry is still optimistic that the message will get over. “It needs to stop because imagine being a mother,” she argued. That aches so badly.
