“Our family was devastated today by what my son Gavin referred to as a ‘rip tide.’ Close to midday, the Columbia police confirmed the brutal slaying of my 12 year old granddaughter, Elaina Marie Smith. Thankfully, the suspect is behind bars tonight.
I was there to welcome Elaina at birth, I baptized her, enjoyed immensely the year she lived with us in the Poconos, and you should see us when we played together. She was scheduled to spend this weekend with Grandma and Grandpa. A part of me died today. Over the next few days I will pay photo tributes to her on my FB page. I covet your prayers for our family, and especially my eldest son, Dwayne, Elaina’s dad.”

Funeral Services
Members and friends are welcome to visit Lampeter UMC this afternoon to pray in the sanctuary. Additionally, the church will assemble for a special prayer session this evening at 6:30 o’clock to pray for the family as a group. Although the Smith family won’t be there, members of the church will share their sorrow, offer up their prayers to God, and express their support for the family.
Funeral plans and an obituary for Elaina Marie Smith will be announced by the family.
