Devastated to hear of the death of the truly extraordinary Irish actor. Maeliosa Stafford who I first saw do The Playboy of the Western World in London and got to know him as a creative force in Sydney. Gone too young.

Maeliosa Stafford- Theatre Actor

Maeliosa Stafford is an Actor, Director, Teacher, and Manchester United Fanatic.

He joined Druid Theatre Company in 1978 and has been at the forefront of much of the recent surge in outstanding new Irish writing. As Artistic Director of Druid, he collaborated with the poet Vincent Woods on the creation of At The Black Pig’s Dyke which toured to all the world’s major theatre festivals. Maeliosa has been involved with the premier productions of the work of Martin Mc Donagh, including The Lonesome West which won several Olivier awards on the West End and was also nominated for 4 Tony awards on Broadway.

Co-founder of O’Punksky’s Maeliosa directed their inaugural production Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme. Maeliosa teaches at N.I.D.A., ACTT, and UWS Nepean and just graduated from Syd University with a postgraduate degree in performance studies.

Maeliosa’s work on the stage

Maeliosa’s recent work on the stage includes The Gigli Concert, The Seafarer, The Playboy of the Western World, and A Whistle in the Dark at the Abbey Theatre Dublin. Druid theatre acting credits include The Lonesome West, Galway, London, Broadway, Sydney, The Playboy of the Western World, Carthaginians, Cheapside, and Lovers Meeting. Favorite roles in Sydney include The Gigli Concert, Faith Healer, Sons of Ulster (O’Punksky’s Theatre), Trelawney of the Wells, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Democracy, A Hard God (Sydney Theatre Company), Dancing at Lughnasa [Queensland theatre company].

Television and Film credits include The Midnight Court, Stingers 3, Me, Myself and I, Quigley Down Under, White Collar Blue, Rake 4, and Drop Dead Weird.

It’s possible that the fact that Maeliosa was a member of the Druid Theatre Company contributed to the outcome of this situation. He collaborated closely with the poet Vincent Woods on the staging of the play At the Black Pig’s Dyke while he was serving as the Artistic Director of Druid. After it was performed for the first time, the play went on to tour all of the major theater festivals all over the world. She was a pioneer in the field. In addition to his career as an actor, director, and educator, he is a rabid admirer of Manchester United. His passion for the team dates back to his childhood. Since he was a young boy, he has followed the fortunes of the club.

Maeliosa joined the Druid Theatre Company in 1978, and ever since that year, she has been at the forefront of a substantial amount of the recent boom in superb new Irish literature. This can be attributed to the fact that she has been writing some of the plays that have been performed by the company.

It’s with shock and sadness that I learned today of the loss of Maeliosa Stafford. A beautiful man and one of the greatest stage actors of his generation, my heart goes out to all his friends and family at O’Punksy’s, The Druid, and all who shared his passion and his space.

I last spoke to Moi in 2020 when he generously spoke to my Applied Art of Acting class on Zoom from his back garden. Stafford gave his time and experience with inspirational fervor as always. Maeliosa also spoke of the death of his father who passed away while laughing. “He laughed himself to death,” he said. “That’s the way to go.” I don’t know if Maeliosa went in any similar fashion, but I know he’s smiling that contagious smile from somewhere upon all who loved him. RIP.
