Obituary

It’s possible that the fact that Maeliosa was a member of the Druid Theatre Company contributed to the outcome of this situation. He collaborated closely with the poet Vincent Woods on the staging of the play At the Black Pig’s Dyke while he was serving as the Artistic Director of Druid. After it was performed for the first time, the play went on to tour all of the major theater festivals all over the world. She was a pioneer in the field. In addition to his career as an actor, director, and educator, he is a rabid admirer of Manchester United. His passion for the team dates back to his childhood. Since he was a young boy, he has followed the fortunes of the club.

Maeliosa joined the Druid Theatre Company in 1978, and ever since that year, she has been at the forefront of a substantial amount of the recent boom in superb new Irish literature. This can be attributed to the fact that she has been writing some of the plays that have been performed by the company.

It’s with shock and sadness that I learned today of the loss of Maeliosa Stafford. A beautiful man and one of the greatest stage actors of his generation, my heart goes out to all his friends and family at O’Punksy’s, The Druid, and all who shared his passion and his space.

I last spoke to Moi in 2020 when he generously spoke to my Applied Art of Acting class on Zoom from his back garden. Stafford gave his time and experience with inspirational fervor as always. Maeliosa also spoke of the death of his father who passed away while laughing. “He laughed himself to death,” he said. “That’s the way to go.” I don’t know if Maeliosa went in any similar fashion, but I know he’s smiling that contagious smile from somewhere upon all who loved him. RIP.
