Belated news of the death of iconic Taiwanese singer Liu Wen-cheng rocked the Chinese showbiz scene today (Feb 15).

According to media reports, Wen-cheng’s former manager Hsia Yu-shun had a nagging discomfort one night in December last year and called Wen-cheng’s family.

It was then that he received the bad news. Wen-cheng reportedly died of a heart attack in November last year in Las Vegas. He was aged 70.

At the age of 70, former Taiwanese vocalist Liu Wen Cheng passed away. The reclusive singer achieved prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, and because of the influence he had on the music business, he was once referred to as the “First Ancestor of Idols.”

Wen Cheng passed suddenly in November, according to recent information from the singer’s agent, Xia Yushun. Yushun revealed that Wen Cheng passed away a week before his birthday and that the cause of death was a heart attack.

He was living alone at the time, and his body wasn’t found until his younger sister woke up the following morning.

Yushun also revealed that in December of last year, he sensed something was off. He eventually called Wen Cheng’s family, who informed him that the celebrity had passed suddenly.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Liu dominated the Mandarin music industry and became well-known for his distinctive ensemble of hats and scarf. In Southeast Asia, China, and Hong Kong, his songs were also well-liked.

With the release of his debut album, The Promise, in 1975, he gained notoriety. In 1980, 1982, and 1983, he took home the Golden Bell Award for Best Male Singer in Taiwan.

Sylvia Chang and Tien Niu costarred in his debut film, The Story Of Four Girls (1975), and in 1977 he presented the singing program Liu Wen-Time chengs with the Chinese Television System, which had an 82% audience rating. In the seven years between 1975 and 1982, he appeared in 22 romantic television shows, making him a household name.

At the height of his popularity in 1983, Wen Cheng, who won three Golden Bell Awards for Best Male Singer before the age of 30, declared his decision to concentrate on backstage work.

Cheng’s Career

Then, in 1991, eight years later, he relocated to America and virtually left the entertainment industry. After then, he disappeared from view and was never spotted in public. Wen Cheng, who came from an affluent family, reportedly had a happy life as a real estate investor in New York City.

After his contract with Polygram expired in 1984, Liu relocated to the United States. However, he later returned to Taiwan to establish the Feiying (Flying Eagle) record label, which signed artists such as Annie Yi, Fang Wen-lin, and Donna Chiu as well as Eric Moo and Huo Cheng-chi.

In 1991, Liu shut down the label and moved to the US, exiting the entertainment business altogether. In an interview with the media, Mr. Hsia claimed that Liu left at the height of his fame so that everyone would remember him at his finest.

Over the years, a lot of people had claimed to have seen Liu, but Mr. Hsia, who stated that Liu exclusively interacted with his close pals, contradicted this.
