What happened to the children?

Just after 9 a.m. on Saturday in Shawnee County, an accident claimed the lives of three Kansas children.

Robert Hosey Russell, 70, of Huntsville, Alabama, was operating a 2022 Kenworth semi-truck southbound on Interstate 335, the Kansas Turnpike, just south of Topeka, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

According to the KHP, the semi struck a 2018 Dodge van being driven by Amber Marie Peery, 32, of Topeka, as she tried to turn through the barrier wall.

Three children, all from Topeka, perished in the collision, including two 9-year-old girls and an 8-year-old girl.

Peery, a 5-year-old boy, and a 9-year-old girl, all from Topeka, were taken to Stormont Vail by EMS. There was no harm to Russell.

What did Police reports confess?

According to a statement from USD 437 Superintendent Scott McWilliams, the deceased girls were pupils at Auburn-Washburn Elementary School. “These youngsters include two fourth-graders from Farley Elementary and a third-grader from Jay Shideler Elementary.”

“These students, as well as their families, are on our minds. Our entire school community, especially our pupils, are affected by this loss, and they have many questions and feelings.”

To assist with the needs of children, parents, and school staff during trying moments like this, our schools have crisis teams made up of specialists with the necessary training.

The incident will be explained to the pupils at Farley Elementary and Jay Shideler Elementary on Monday morning in an age-appropriate way.

Students who need time to reflect, talk about, or grieve will have access to dedicated support rooms.

When needed, students and staff members can meet with counselors and social workers.
