John Tracey aka Johnny Tracey, a legendary Ploughman passed away on May 21, 2023. Let’s see how did Johnny die and his cause of death in detail.

How did John Tracey die?

Johnny Tracey, a Carlow Ploughman from Knocklonegad, Garryhill has passed away. This sad news was announced by Carlow County Camogie in the following statement,

Carlow Camogie wishes to express its deepest sympathy to all the family of Johnny (John) Tracey, Knocklonegad, and Garryhill at this sad time. Johnny a renowned ploughman followed the fortunes of his own family and grandchildren on the hurling and football fields over a long number of years.

Johnny was a dear father to Ballinkillen coach Derek, grandfather to current county player Niamh and father-in-law to Shane Foley and Mary Tracey who are wonderful volunteers to us in Carlow Camogie.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his beloved wife Lil, his son Michael, Eamonn, and Derek, daughters Sharon and Catriona, grandchildren, great-grandchild, brothers, sisters, and all the extended Tracey family.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Who was John Tracey?

John Tracey commonly known as Johnny Tracey was a legendary Ploughman from Carlow. The farmer Tracey became well-known after winning many Ploughing Championships.

He won the silver medal at the World Ploughing Championships that took place in Prague in 2005. This is the seventh silver medal the Garryhill farmer has won in his roughly 50-year career as a plowman. 

John took home the silver medal and the silver in the grassland and stubble categories at the World Ploughing Championship. 

For 23 years, he has participated in the World Ploughing Championship, and in September 2005, he faced off against 30 other nations.

Bernard Altman from Austria won the competition. Wexford native John Whelan placed seventh overall while John Tracy finished in second place.

John was a beloved husband of Lil, adored father to Michael, Eamonn, Catriona, Derek, and Sharon.

John Tracey cause of death:

Ploughman John Tracey died from an undisclosed illness. Tributes flooded social media after his demise news broke out.

Cavan Ploughing Club also shared this sad news in the following statement,

Everyone in Cavan Ploughing Club wish to extend their deepest sympathy to the Tracey family on the death of John RIP, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad and difficult time.

Funeral service: Reposing in his home on Monday and Tuesday from 2 pm to 8 pm (both days).

Funeral service will begin from his residence on Wednesday at 11 am Requiem Mass at Saint Lazarian’s Church, Drumphea. burial following at the nearby cemetery.

The Tracey family would like to express their gratitude to Johnny’s family physician, Doctor Hussane, as well as the administration and staff of the District Hospital in Carlow and the Mater Private Hospital. 

He will be missed by daughters-in-law Annette and Mary, sons-in-law Paul and Shane, grandchildren John, Aoife, Mike, Brian, Sean, David, Steve, Mark, Conor, Niamh, Katelyn, Kian, and Charlie, great-grandchild Ella, brothers Eamonn, Pat, Michael, Tom, Luke, and Matt, sisters Ann, Kathleen & Jo, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives.
