How did John Duncan die?

The Dundonian played for the Dark Blues and Tottenham Hotspur more than 100 times throughout the course of a 15-year playing career.

When Dundee defeated Celtic at Hampden in 1974, he won the League Cup.

He would subsequently score against AC Milan in a loss later in the campaign and also score a famous hat trick in the UEFA Cup against Cologne.

In announcing the news, Dundee said,

“Everyone at Dundee Football Club was saddened to learn of the death of Hall of Fame inductee John Duncan.

“John spent seven seasons with the club between 1968 and 1975 before signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

“Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Football Career

Before leaving for London in 1974 for a club record £140,000, Duncan played 188 times for the team in his hometown.

He finished as Scotland’s leading scorer with 109 goals, including an astounding 40 in 46 appearances in 1972–73.

Duncan continues to rank as the seventh-highest goalscorer for the team all-time.

Before transitioning into managing, he spent his last playing seasons with Scunthorpe United and Derby County.

Following a player-manager position at Scunthorpe, Duncan took over at Chesterfield, where he established himself as a manager, before moving on to Ipswich in 1987.

Duncan returned to the Spirietes for seven more years, up to 2000, after spending three years at Portman Road.

He is remembered for leading them to the 1997 FA Cup semifinal, where they lost to Middlesbrough after a replay.

He was also a qualified teacher.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the former manager of Manchester United, also praised Duncan in a statement issued by the League Managers’ Association.

“I will always remember John with a great deal of respect and affection,”

“When I was playing and managing in Scotland, I remember him playing up front for Dundee, and then of course he went on to be an exceptional striker for Tottenham.

“John had such humility and a great sense of humor and I spoke with him only a matter of weeks ago.

“I will miss seeing him and I send my deepest condolences to his daughters, his sister, his partner, and their families.”
