Before making the finding, police were dispatched to a hotel on Melbourne’s Lygon Street, which is well-known for its eateries and nightclubs, to do a welfare check. Following the death of Mr. Zonfrillo in Carlton, officers declared that they would submit a report to the coroner.

Prior to his passing, the chef spoke openly about his struggles with addiction, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder in 2021. He opened out about his struggle with anxiety and disclosed that he carried worry beads as a coping mechanism.

He confessed,

“I never thought I would have anxiety, let alone admit to it,

It’s a real working class problem to arrive somewhere and think that you’re not good enough,

For me, I’ve done that my entire life. Every job I’ve got, I’ve felt like I wasn’t good enough to be there.

When I’m nervous or anxious, my brain would just start racing, like I’m thinking irrationally, so by using the worry beads, it calms that noise in my brain,

‘I’ve got a set of worry beads on me all the time, so if they’re not in my hand, they’re in my pocket. I’ve made so many types, they’re kind of weirdly an accessory.

‘On MasterChef, I’ve got different colours for different suits that I wear. So it’s not a flashing beacon that says ‘I have a problem’ or ‘I have anxiety’.”

Before becoming one of Australia’s most renowned chefs, Zonfrillo notably overcame a heroin addiction. He began his career in the UK working for Michelin-starred chef Marco Pierre White.

He said that quitting using the substance was “the best thing I’ve ever done.”
