Who was Lyn Sahr?

Lyn Sahr usually claims to have been born in St. Paul, but the truth is that he chose that location to be close to his mother. He was born in a Salvation Army-run unwed mothers’ home at William Booth Memorial Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He endured severe effects from the Asiatic Flu and needed a full blood transfusion while receiving treatment. He finally had the opportunity to see his grandma in Siren, Wisconsin, after many days. His mother held a job first in Chicago and then in the Twin Cities. He spent his first seven years of life living with his grandparents and regularly going to a little country church five times a week.

Lyn lived with his mother and stepfather until he completed high school after his mother remarried when he was seven. He was shocked at how much he had learnt from going to church as a youngster as an adult. Lyn might have been a better student in high school, but he wasn’t.

He simply lacked motivation, and his home life left him feeling quite dissatisfied. He devoted his life to sports as a result, and he achieved great success. He participated in teams that had success in baseball, basketball, and football. As a running back for the state of Minnesota, he received honorable mention on the all-state football team. Lyn started a profession in pastoral ministry in the next years and served as a pastor for 25 years.

He took over as pastor of six tiny churches that were on the verge of closing, and he revitalized the memberships. The majority of such churches are still operating well today. Half of them fell apart and were shut. Lyn was leading a church at the time, going on four to five annual mission trips to Mexico, and just loving life! Three organizations in Minneapolis were supplying them with presents to send to Mexico.

One day the director of one of those ministries phoned Lyn and informed her that they would no longer be a part of the group and that they would need to purchase the toys straight from the source they had been using. Lyn started working on establishing the non-profit organization.

Everything was in order after seven months, and they were prepared to travel to Minneapolis to pick up toys. They were shocked to see their truck loaded with food at the initial pickup, though! They started dispersing the food after bringing it home. In 2003, Ruby’s Pantry was established.

Ruby’s Pantry:

The history of Ruby’s Pantry may be told in great detail. Lyn envisions one day compiling the entire rich history into a book. Since they had no idea what would happen from day to day in the early years of Ruby’s Pantry, life was mostly a struggle. A cube van, a 20-foot used truck, and a 24-foot used truck were donated to the organization. What do you call this? a guy asked Lyn after the first seven weeks. It need a name. I suppose we’ll call it Ruby’s Pantry, Lyn replied. Ruby, Lyn’s grandmother, was a devout Christian who taught him the importance of having God in his life. Today, Ruby’s Pantry has expanded considerably.

They employ 70 people and provide services to over 24,000 families (or 60,000 people) in 2019. Their Facebook page has just under 26,000 fans. They have 18 semi-tractors, 25 refrigerator trailers, and 9 structures that they use to support our 80 monthly Pop-Up Pantry sites, all of which are supported by churches. God is always present for all of us when we ask Him to and when we wake up each day asking for His blessings.
