If you’ve ever seen a PlayStation commercial, you’ve heard the iconic sound accompanying the logo. For almost the entirety of the platform’s existence, this note has been associated with it. sadly the man who composed it passed away at the age of 73.
His iconic musical accompaniment to Sony’s PlayStation logo – a sort of brisk fuzzy ping, for want of a better description – has appeared at the top of countless PlayStation adverts for more than 25 years now and is still routinely used today. You can, for instance, hear it at the start of this No Man’s Sky trailer, uploaded this afternoon.

Cause of death
The Japanese press is reporting Okada passed away from heart failure on the morning of 14th February, with his management sharing the news earlier today.

TOHRU OKADA, THE ACTOR WHO PLAYED THE TV WITH THE PLAYSTATION
Tohru Okada contributed one note to the PlayStation commercial, and that was all that was necessary to end history. If you hear the metallic ping, you immediately know you are ready to see something PlayStation-related. Having strong brand recognition is one of the reasons for being still in charge almost three decades after the last release of the PS1.
The PlayStation commercial sound has a bit of symmetry that you may not notice at first. It was composed by placing the tin in the robotic play-station said at the end of the commercial and layering a note on top of it. So, every commercial starts and ends the same way.
Okada – Music career
Okada was also a keyboard player and founding member of the Moon riders, along with Mother composer Keiichi Suzuki. The band wrote on Facebook that its concert intended for April 29 and April 30 has now been canceled, but they’ll share their thoughts on the late Okada during the event.
Okada’s music career spanned decades and a wide variety of mediums including movies and anime, but he was perhaps best known in Japan as a founding member of the influential rock band Moon riders, where he played alongside bandmate Keiichi Suzuki – who would go on to compose the music for Nintendo’s Mother series.
Okada’s ties to gaming came primarily through his successful career composing for commercials. He notably wrote music for a series of very strange Crash Bandicoot adverts in the 90s (thanks Gamespot), but his most enduring – and immediately recognizable – contribution to gaming arrived through his work with PlayStation.
