Einstein Barnes, the dog who portrayed Cain in Red Dead Redemption 2 by Rockstar has passed away. Let’s see how did Barnes die and his cause of death in detail.

How did Einstein die?

Einstein, the dog who played Cain in Red Dead Redemption 2’s motion capture scenes, died unexpectedly at the age of 13, according to his owner.

RDR2 animator Jason Barnes, who was both Einstein’s employer and a coworker, posted the sad news of his passing on Instagram. Barnes stated that Einstein “was truly one of a kind.”

“From the moment we met, we formed a deep bond, and it was clear that we were destined for countless adventures together.”

“Though our time together has come to an end, your memory will live on forever. Red Dead Redemption 2 may immortalize you as Cain, but it is the memories we created together that truly preserve your spirit. The lessons you taught me about loyalty, love, and living life to the fullest will never be forgotten.”

Who was Einstein Barnes?

Einstein Barnes was the real name of the canine motion capture actor playing Cain the dog in Red Dead Redemption 2.

In the third chapter of Red Dead Redemption 2, a stray dog named Cain finds his way into the camp of the Van der Linde gang.

His real-life actor, Barnes, belonged to the animator of Red Dead Redemption 2, Jason Barnes. Both of them found the transition to be a “big adjustment,” but he was still able to bring Einstein to work every day, where he earned the reputation of “being the best dog.”

The only thing that bothered him, according to Barnes, was that “he would occasionally ‘glee pee’ when he saw certain members of the team,” especially ingame cinematography director Luke Howard.

Einstein frequently traveled with Barnes when he began working on the Long Island RDR2 motion capture set. His role as Cain initially only served as a test fitting for the dog mo-cap outfit, but at this time, “he was known by all of the actors and because of his service training, he was very used to sitting and waiting patiently which made him a perfect mo-cap dog.”

“It started with a few tests, and the next thing we knew, he was cast as Cain,” Barnes remarked. I loved working with him as his trainer when we were filming. We did some clever stage offset [filming angle] and such to get the stunt of Micah kicking him as well as the ones with Micah chasing him off. Barnes was obsessed with lasers so we often used those to get him to run in a specific direction.

“He would often nail every shot, even did a bunch of the movement mo-cap for the basic dog stuff, however his mo-cap time was primarily focused on the Cain moments and performance. He was such a good boy. It’s incredible how well he did, even the actors were surprised.”, Barnes said.

Einstein Barnes cause of death:

The dog actor Barnes passed away at the age of 13.

Barnes claimed that Einstein, a dog he adopted from a shelter when he was a puppy, was referred to as the “best dog” in the Rockstar Games New York office. The Blue Heeler, who was predicted to live into his 20s, tragically passed away from cancer.

Sad news to share, our Animation Director’s very good boy we showed in a mocap suit back in 2021, Einstein, has passed away. He was always a joy to have in the office, and we’re already missing him greatly.
