“Our defender Moustapha Sylla died this evening following an illness on the pitch during the RCA vs Sol FC match,” said a club statement.

What happened at the scene?
Moustapha Sylla collapsed on the pitch when his club, Racing Club d’Abidjan, faced SOL FC in a league game on Sunday which they eventually won 3-1. Harrowing video footage from the Ivory Coast shows the left-sided defender taking several steps backward before losing his balance and dropping down near the center circle.
Frightened teammates and opposition players immediately called for the referee to stop the game. Club president Logossina Cisse confirmed to AFP that the 21-year-old had sadly died in an ambulance as emergency services rushed to try and save his life. “During his evacuation to the hospital, Moustapha died,” Cisse said. “He arrived at the club last September and was only 21.”

The young defender only joined the club in September and was just 21. The club released a statement offering condolences to the player’s family and expressing their shock and sadness over the sudden loss.
Racing d’Abidjan has been playing in the Ivorian first division since the 2018/2019 season and has a partnership with OGC Nice. The club and its fans are now in mourning over the untimely death of a promising young player. Moustapha Sylla collapsed on the pitch during the RCA vs Sol FC match and received immediate medical attention.
However, tragically, he could not be saved. He took his last breath while being transported to the hospital.
Club president Logossina Cisse informed AFP that Sylla had felt unwell during the match against Sol FC. He confirmed to AFP that Sylla had passed away onboard the ambulance.
