How did Tony Johnson die?

Tony Johnson, 55, died from a severe head injury sustained during a fight outside a pub near Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road stadium.

Tony’s wife paid a heartfelt condolences saying,

“I am devastated to have lost my best friend, life partner and soul mate in a cruel act. Tony was a very much loved dad, son, brother, uncle and Gramps and obviously a beloved friend to many.

“We all, as a family, are so heartbroken and our lives are never going to be the same. Thank you to the NHS, staff in A&E and the Critical Care Unit at BVH who all did as much as they could for our loved one.

“Thank you for everyone for reaching out but please could you respect our privacy at this difficult time. He will be one missed gentleman and the party will live on through us all, just as he would’ve wanted. Rest in peace my darling, tangerine dreams forever.”

The Championship club has also released the statement regarding the Tony’s passing and it reads,

“Blackpool FC is deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the news that supporter, Tony Johnson, tragically lost his life earlier this morning.”

A go fund me page has also been established for Tony Johnson. The Blackpool Tower has lit up in tangerine in remembrance of Tony.

What happened to Tony Johnson?

Tony was severely hurt during the match between Blackpool Vs Burnley on Saturday night.

Following a league encounter that ended in a 0-0 draw between Blackpool and Burnley, the Lancashire Police issued a statement describing the incident.

At the intersection of Lytham Road and the Promenade, outside The Manchester pub, an altercation involving a number of individuals broke out around 7 o’clock on Saturday, March 4.

Officers were called to the pub after the Blackpool vs. Burnley football match and discovered a man with a severe head injury.

The man, who was in his 50s, was treated on the spot with CPR before being taken to the hospital.
Since then, he has been identified as Blackpool native Tony Johnson, 55.

Mr. Johnson died unexpectedly overnight, and his next of kin are now being assisted by specially trained officers, officers said.

It is believed that several football fans got into a fight, and Mr. Johnson was hurt as a result of this event.
There is currently no evidence that he was targeted specifically.

At the time of the incident, a 33-year-old Burnley male was detained by the Lancashire Police. He has since been released on bail awaiting further investigation until June 1st.

‘Lifelong Seasider’:

Blackpool called Johnson a “lifelong Seasider” and invited supporters to leave flowers and condolences outside the stadium on Monday.

Detectives are appealing for any evidence or video of the incident as they work to piece together the evening’s events.

Blackpool FC club released the statement saying,

“The Club will be offering an open book of condolence from 4 pm in the Moretti Lounge, giving supporters the opportunity to pay their respects to Tony.

“Supporters are also invited to lay flowers at the Mortensen Statue behind the North Stand at 4 pm today along with the Club’s staff and players, giving everyone associated with the football club the chance to come together and remember a lifelong Seasider.

“All of the thoughts of everyone at the football club go out to Tony’s family and friends.
“Rest in peace, Tony.”

Police investigation:

DCI Tracey McMurdo, of Lancashire Police, stated: “Mr Johnson’s family are devastated by their loss and we are supporting them at this incredibly difficult time.

“The incident took place in a busy area and we know there were a lot of people around at the time who will have seen all or part of what happened, and there may also be people who filmed the incident on a mobile phone or captured it on CCTV or dashcam. If you have any information that will help us piece together what happened, please get in touch.”

Police says that investigation is ongoing.
