How did Maon Kurosaki die?

On Tuesday, the agency Art One Entertainment announced that singer Maon Kurosaki died unexpectedly on February 16 due to a worsening of her chronic illness.

After collapsing in the middle of a live-streamed concert earlier that month, Kurosaki underwent emergency surgery in September 2021 for Epidural Hematoma. She suffered the condition where bleeding between the skull and the membrane surrounding the brain.

Who was Maon Kurosaki?

Kurosaki Maon rose to prominence after performing in Tokyo’s Otaku shopping district, Akihabara, and then made her major label debut with ending theme songs for the anime Highschool of the Dead. 

She made her major debut in 2010, performing ending themes to the anime television series Highschool of the Dead after being discovered while working as a performer in Akihabara, Tokyo.

In September 2010, she released her debut album H.O.T.D., which includes the ending themes from Highschool of the Dead. Her first two singles served as the closing themes for the anime television series A Certain Magical Index II.

Maon’s love of anime and lolita fashion influenced Kurosaki’s music. Her songs have appeared in a number of anime series, including Jormungand, Tokyo Ravens, and The Fruit of Grisaia.

For her music releases, she has worked with artists such as Mami Kawada, Kotoko, and Trustrick.
She performed twice at the 2011 Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

Maon Kurosaki singing career:

Maon Kurosaki frequently appears at Japanese anime conventions such as LisAni, Animelo Summer Live, and Animax Musix.

She has also performed at the Anime Festival Asia, the Bangkok Comic Con, and CharaExpo. She was the singer of the synthpop band Altima, along with Motsu of the band Move, from 2011 to 2016.

Maon Kurosaki began her singing career at the performance venue and bar Dear Stage in Akihabara, where she had been singing since at least January 2008.

Music producer Akihiro Tomita noticed her singing talent and later became her producer when she signed with Geneon Universal Entertainment (now NBC Universal Entertainment Japan).

Her major debut was first announced to her fans in January 2010. Prior to her major debut, she worked as a gravure model for the cover of Ysaku Kitano’s novel Maid Road Reload, which was published on April 26, 2010, by ASCII Media Works under their Media Works Bunko imprint.

Major works:

On September 22, 2010, Kurosaki released her debut album H.O.T.D. She also appeared as a voice actress in the series’ twelfth episode.

From July 7 to September 22, 2010, she performed songs from the album once a week at Dear Stage to commemorate the album and the anime’s broadcast.

On October 16, 2010, another event commemorating the album was held at Animate in Yokohama. On October 7, 2010, Kurosaki became the regular host of the Thursday broadcast of the radio programme A&G Artist Zone 2h; she would host the show until 2011.

Her debut single “MagicWorld” was released on November 24, 2010, and she performed at Dear Stage to celebrate.

On March 2, 2011, Kurosaki’s second single “Memories Last” was released. “MagicWorld” and “Memories Last” were both released. These songs are used as the closing theme songs for the 2010 anime series A Certain Magical Index II.

On March 4-5, 2011, Kurosaki held her first solo live event, “Maon Kurosaki Live 2011 Spring: Memories First,” in Harajuku. She made her North American debut at Anime Expo 2011 in Los Angeles, California, on July 1 and 3, 2011.

She released the mini-album Goshiki Uta: Immortal Lovers, which contains the ending theme songs from the 2011 original video animation series Hakuki Sekkaroku.

On August 28, 2011, she made her debut at Animelo Summer Live during its 2011 iteration. On November 30, 2011, Kurosaki released her second studio album Butterfly Effect, which included the song “Scars.”

Kurosaki performs at the 2014 Bangkok Comic Con. Kurosaki formed Altima with Move’s Mototaka “Motsu” Segawa and fripSide’s Satoshi “Sat” Yaginuma in 2011.

In 2012, Kurosaki released three more singles: “Hell:ium”, “Reimei”, “Under/ Shaft”. In 2012, she attended the Anime Festival Asia Malaysia. Vertical Horizon, her third studio album, was released on April 10, 2013.

Her November 6, 2013 single “X-Encounter” serves as the opening theme for the 2013 Tokyo Ravens anime series. Reincarnation, her fourth studio album, was released on July 23, 2014.

She attended the Bangkok Comic Con in July 2014. Her seventh single, “Rakuen no Tsubasa”, was released on October 15, 2014; the song serves as the opening theme for the 2014 anime series The Fruit of Grisaia.

On May 13, 2015, her eighth single “Setsuna no Kajitsu” was released; the title track serves as the opening theme for the 2015 anime Le Eden de la Grisaia.
