His passing was announced on Facebook by his wife, Melissa, who stated that he had “fought with mental health concerns.”

Jamey Rootes died after a long struggle with mental health issues.

Jamey was a dedicated Houstonian who loved his city and touched so many lives through his professional, academic, and philanthropic work. Our family is requesting privacy and will not be responding to media inquiries. The details of a celebration of Jamey’s life will be announced at a later date.

On 22 August 2022, Jamey Rootes died at the age of 56. He died after a struggle with mental health issues. His wife, Melissa Wildgen Rootes, revealed the news in a Facebook post on Monday.

Jamey Rootes was an American sports executive who passed away on August 22, 2022. 

He previously held the position of president of the National Football League’s Houston Texans (NFL). 

He was in charge of the group’s business affairs. 

He served as the president and general manager of the Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew before joining the Texans. 

He attended Clemson University, where he participated in both the soccer team and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

At Indiana University Bloomington, where he also worked as an assistant soccer coach, he obtained an MBA. 

 Before announcing his resignation in February 2021, Rootes had more than 20 years working with the Texans. 

 Before resigning 18 days later, Rootes served as the chief executive officer of the Houston Dynamo FC of Major League Soccer and the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League. Rootes passed away on August 22, 2022, at the age of 56.

The Texans organization released a statement on Monday night of their former leader’s passing, reflecting on his long ties to the city and NFL team.

“We are heartbroken to learn that former Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes has passed away. For two decades, Jamey led our business operations with an unwavering commitment to Houston and the Houston Texans. We are grateful for his steadfast leadership and immeasurable contributions to our team. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Jamey’s wife, Melissa, and their two children during this extremely difficult time,” Janice, Cal and Hannah McNair said in a statement.

Former Texans cornerback Justin Reid remembered Rootes as an uplifting member of the team.

“So sad to hear the news about Jamey Rootes. Was a great man and was always positive around the building. Prayers for his family,” Reid tweeted.

John McClain, a retired NFL journalist for the Houston Chronicle, recalled meeting Rootes and lamented his time spent away from the Texans.

“I first met Jamey Rootes 22 years ago after (Texans founder) Bob McNair selected him to lead the team’s marketing division based on Lamar Hunt’s recommendation. 

Jamey was quickly elevated by Bob to president, a position he held up until his resignation in 2021.

Reid Ryan, Rootes’ equivalent as the president of the Houston Astros, similarly recalled the day when he first met his neighbour.
