The Improv released the death statement of Mr. Budd Friedman. The statement reads: “The comedy world lost a giant tonight. He was not a stand-up comedian or sitcom star or movie legend. But he gave birth to a generation of artists who defined American comedy and culture for decades.”

Who is Budd Friedman?
Budd M. Friedman (born Gerson M. Friedman on June 6, 1932) was the founder and original proprietor as well as the MC of the Improvisation Comedy Club, which opened in 1963 on West 44th Street near the SE corner of 9th Avenue in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen area.
In 1963, shortly after leaving his position as an advertising executive with the intention of becoming a theatrical producer, Friedman founded the Improv in New York City. Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Albert Finney, Christopher Plummer, and Jason Robard were among the celebrities who frequented the coffee shop. At the time, the club featured performances by lesser-known artists including Dustin Hoffman and Bette Midler. Friedman eventually opened a club in L.A. in 1975 after the NYC club’s success.
Throughout his life, Friedman had a few acting roles, including, to name a few, Star 80 (1983), That’s Adequate (1989), Man on the Moon (1999), Mambo Café (2000), The Boneyard Collection (2008), Funny People (2009), and Louie (2012).
In addition to managing Bette Midler briefly at the beginning of her career, he helped launch the comedic careers of Rodney Dangerfield, Richard Lewis, Robert Klein, Jay Leno, Andy Kaufman, Freddie Prinze, Steve Landesberg, and Jimmie Walker. Ms. Midler’s first appearance on The Tonight Show was made possible thanks to Friedman’s assistance and direction. He was both a producer and a performer. Friedman additionally started improv groups in several places, including the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California on March 23, 2007, in Los Angeles in 1975, and in Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio, California.
