Who is McKean?

Hugh McKean served as a state representative for Colorado’s Loveland. Republican McKean represented the area around Loveland and the Colorado House of Representatives District 51. His first election was in 2016.

McKean previously held the position of Loveland City Councilor before being elected as a state representative.
McKean was chosen as the 73rd General Assembly’s House Minority Leader, beginning on January 13, 2021.

McKean has spent his last two years trying to mend a rift in the House GOP caucus between hard-line conservatives and Republicans looking for a path to regain control of the chamber by courting the state’s Democratic voters.

McKean often became a target of the hard-liners because of his efforts. In a difficult primary in June, he handily defeated Republican Austin Hein, a former House staffer who had previously worked for McKean’s predecessor, the then-House Minority Leader Patrick Neville, and for the hard-line gun-rights organization Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.

When it became evident that he wouldn’t be chosen again by his caucus to lead them, Neville gave up his position as House minority leader in 2020. Instead, House Republicans selected McKean as their leader.
