Teammates have expressed their astonishment over the sudden passing of former football player Gary Pearson at the age of 45 from what is believed to be a heart attack.

The former Darlington FC player, who was well known throughout the North East for having played for and coached a number of clubs, was eager to begin his new position as the manager of Billingham Town FC.

Following the news that Gary had passed away at home on Thursday, club chairman Kevin Close stated that everyone at the Teesside club was in mourning.

He declared: “We are totally in disbelief. He was so fit and robust. He had a heart attack a few weeks ago while playing, and was rushed to James Cook Hospital.

When he was a player for Seaham Red Star and Durham City, Pearson often shared the field with his brother Alan. He had an amazing vision. He was incredibly enthused and elicited the best performance from his players. He belonged to the boys.

 

Gary Pearson Career

Pearson, who was raised in Seaham, County Durham, began his professional career with the Sheffield United development program before committing to the team on July 3, 1995.

He left United after three seasons and switched to non-league football on March 22, 1996, when he signed with Stalybridge Celtic.

On October 16, 2001, Darlington defeated Macclesfield Town 2-1 at home, marking his professional debut. In the FA Cup encounter between Darlington and Peterborough United on January 21, 2002, Pearson made an impact as a substitute and earned a run of six games before suffering an injury.

During this time, on January 26, 2002, in a 3-2 home loss to Luton Town, he scored his first goal for the team with a 25-yard free-kick.

In July 2006, he agreed to become a player coach for Horden Colliery Welfare. Later that year, he began playing with Sunderland Nissan and stayed with them until 2009, when the club dissolved. The next two seasons were spent with Spennymoor Town.

Gary Pearson’s Coaching career

Prior to taking over as manager in December 2011, Pearson spent the first half of the 2011–12 campaign at Crook Town as a player coach.

In order to take over at Ryhope Colliery Welfare, he resigned in May 2014. He was chosen to lead Billingham Town in 2022.
