Career
Danny Kalb, who was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, started his career as a solo performer and session guitarist, collaborating with artists like Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, and Bob Dylan on recordings and live performances.
Solo Performer
Dave Van Ronk’s protege, Kalb, went on to perform solo and as a studio musician for folk singers including Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan.
The New Strangers were founded by Sam Charters, a blues ethnomusicologist, and Kalb. In 1963, he became a part of Van Ronk’s Ragtime Jug Stompers.
Kalb experimented with acoustic and electronic music while being influenced by African-American blues musicians Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, and Son House.
At the age of 15
When Kalb was 15 years old, he started the group Gay Notes, and in 1961, they appeared in a concert aired on WBAI-FM together.With his mentor Dave Van Ronk, Kalb took the stage with the Ragtime Jug Stompers in 1963.
It was generally agreed that Kalb was the most interesting of the new players when he recorded in 1964 under the name Folk Stringers, under the direction of guitarist and author Sam Charters.
In 1964, Kalb appeared on Judy Collins’ Fifth Record and contributed to Phil Ochs’ album All the News That’s Fit to Sing by playing the second guitar.
The Blues Project
The Blues Project was founded by Kalb in 1965 alongside Steve Katz, Andy Kulberg, Roy Blumenfeld, and Tommy Flanders.Al Kooper later took Flanders’ place in the band after Flanders quit.
The group split up in 1971 after releasing three albums, performing frequently at the Cafe Au Go Go and Murray the K’s final “submarine race-watching” extravaganza at the RKO 58th Street theatre in New York.
For the next 20 years, he kept to himself, but he did join Al Kooper for a 1996 Bottom Line recording of the Blues Project’s reunion.
21st Century
With Bob Jones on acoustic bass and Mark Ambrosino on drums in the Danny Kalb Trio, Kalb has played both acoustic and electric music in the twenty-first century.
He has also occasionally performed with Stefan Grossman, Steve Katz, and his brother Jonathan Kalb. I’m Gonna Live the Life I Sing About (Sojourn), which was released by the Danny Kalb Trio in 2008, earned positive reviews in the blues media.
The first double CD by Kalb was released in 2013 after that.
A song by several sidemen and guest performers, Moving in Blue is also on the Sojourn label.
He displays all of his musical interests and ingenuity on this album.
Kalb was unable to perform any longer because of chronic health problems.
