I am – I can’t even begin to express. 😢 Our Minweyweywiigaan Lodge Ogimaa Mizhakwanigiizhik-ban Charlie Nelson-ban started his journey through that Western Door.
He was my mentor, my teacher, my Lodge Uncle… his love, kindness, acceptance, and knowledge changed the trajectory of my life in a deeply profound way. I would not be here today if it wasn’t for his leadership and love.
Mazhakwat and I were doing our Mide “work” in Curve Lake for their community in the way he taught us to do when Anna called me. We knew Uncle wouldn’t have wanted us to stop – he always said “keep moving” so we did…carrying a small part of his legacy forward and the community, in turn, enveloped us with so much care and kindness.
I can’t express how grateful I am to Gizhe Mnidoo and Mide Mnidoo for the gift that Uncle was to his family, his Midewiwin family, his community, Nation and all of Creation. His footprints have been and will continue to be followed by so many; his legacy for his children and grandchildren, for all of us, like no other.
We are making our way up North now and then taking the bundle West to be with his family – our Lodge family. You all are in our thoughts, hearts, and asemaa.
