The awful news was announced on Facebook by a friend of Etzebeth’s father, Gerhard Ras, who later confirmed it.
Ras announced his passing on Wednesday morning on Facebook.
“Harry Etzebeth, the father of the Springbok rugby captain and a former opponent of mine in wrestling, passed away last night (Tuesday).
The passing of Harry Etzebeth, the father of stand-in captain Eben Etzebeth, four days before the lock would skipper the team against New Zealand in the Rugby Championship, has shocked the Springbok camp.
Etzebeth will lead the Springboks in their Rugby Championship match against the All Blacks on Saturday at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium, although it is unknown if he will participate in the game.
In the Parow region, a suburb of Cape Town, Springbok Dad was a well-known wrestler. Harry, one of nine children, was well-known in South Africa’s Western Cape region as a successful wrestler and cricket player.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, his brother Clifford, or Cliffie as he was affectionately called, played lock and prop for Western Province. Clifford was also a well-known wrestler who won world championships in the over-60s divisions.
In a Rugby Championship encounter at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium, Eben, who is now in New Zealand, will captain the Springboks against the All Blacks.
If he chooses to lead the team in place of regular captain Siya Kolisi, the Boks will help him in every way possible before the test. He will have plenty of time to decide before the match.
According to an IOL Sports source, Etzebeth is “very emotional” at the moment, but the decision remains with him on whether he wants to play.
