Career

In 1972, Dave was selected by the Montreal Canadians with the eighth overall pick, beginning his professional hockey career. At the time, Gardner was a member of the Toronto Marlboros. At the 1964 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, Gardner represented Leaside on a youth ice hockey team. This tournament took place in Québec.

He was subsequently moved to the St. Louis Blues, where he played 23 games and had 9 points. Dave joined the California Golden Seals, subsequently known as the Cleveland Barons, in a trade midway through the 1974–75 season. He played 289 games and tallied 166 points during that time. David scored at least 16 goals each season for the club for four straight seasons during his tenure.

Dave had a total of 188 points in 348 games while playing in the NHL. Dave began a new chapter in his professional hockey career in 1980 when he agreed to play in Europe with the Swiss Ambri Piotta hockey team. At the base of the mountain, Dave played in an arena with a partially open roof to prevent avalanche damage. While playing in Europe from 1980 to 1988 for both the Swiss-A team, Ambri-Piotta and the Swiss-B team (VISP) Dave played 255 games and earned a total of 641 points.

The Aurora, Ontario, Sports Hall of Fame has inducted David and his son Ryan, who also played in the OHL and Europe. The sons of legendary Leaf player Cal Gardner, who played on the 1949 and 1951 Cup champions and was selected to the top 100 in franchise history at its 2017 Centennial, Paul played for the Leafs and coached their farm team in Newmarket in the late 1980s.
