Who was Eddie Hardiman?

Eddie Hardiman was an tattoo artist from Horden.

Before the government closed the pits in the 1980s, Eddie had worked down the Horden coal mine for 23 years along with hundreds of other miners. Even back then, he worked on tattoos on the weekends and on his time off. At the early age of 14, while still in school, he picked up a needle for the first time, and his very first client was none other than himself.

Eddie Hardiman opened the studio in 1978 with his wife Brenda.

Eddie said back then,

“Altogether I’ve been involved in tattooing for about 55 years,”

“Back then there was no age limit. It was only in 1969 when the age limit became 18.”

“It is very popular, especially with women. Years ago you were lucky if you did one woman a year, now it is at least once a week.”

And as tattoos have gotten more and more popular over the years, demand for his services has increased. Prior to now, Eddie managed the Peterlee Tattoo Arts Festival for ten years.
