Hawai’i’s finest falsetto, Darren Benitez, Died

Darren Benitez, a well-known Hawaiian falsetto singer, died unexpectedly. On Friday, August 11, 2023, it was reported that Darren Benitez, a resident of Halawa, Hawaii, had passed away.

Amy Hanaialii Hawai‘i’s female vocalist confirmed the news of Darren Benitez who wrote the following message on her Facebook page,

I am so saddened by the news of one of the dearest entertainers passing, Darren Benitez. What a blessed voice. One of my favorites of Leo Ki’eki’e. They don’t make voices like Darren. I know you are with your beloved Momma so happy I got to see you on Mother’s Day. I will miss you. Your voice greeted me saying, aloha Babes. 🙏🏻❤️

Who was Darren Benitez?

Music was all around Darren Benitez as a child. Benitez grew up loving the sound of his mother’s and uncle’s voices.

He believed that this was how authentic Hawaiian music should sound because he was raised listening to Dennis Pavao, Ledward, and Nedward Ka’apana (also known as the “Hui O Hana”).

Benitez did not, however, consider a future in music at that time and questioned his own vocal ability. Everything altered in 1986 after a neighbor praised his falsetto singing.

Even though he was first mortified, he quit his job as a forklift operator at the former Dole Cannery. Soon after, he used his final paycheck to purchase his first guitar.

He has since been performing professionally and has contributed to shedding new light on the distinctive beauty of Hawaiian falsetto singing.

Darren delighted in his rapid success and continuous ascent among professional Hawaiian music artists. He was even more inspired to concentrate on performance after he won a music competition at the Jubilee Night Club in 1988.

He first met Uncle Johnny Lum Ho and his halau a year later while performing on the inter-island route of the American Hawaii Cruise. His heart was won over by Uncle Johnny’s genuine voice and the gorgeous dancers.

In the 1990s, Darren continued a tradition of Uncle Johnny and him performing at the Merrie Monarch Festival. Darren’s development as a musician is fueled by inspiration and his ongoing quest to learn more about the music he adores.

Darren recognized as a solo artist

Along with playing and recording with Uncle Johnny, Darren has also gained recognition as a solo performer and shared the stage with Ledward Ka’apana as a member of the New I Kona.

In September 1995, Broken Hearts, his debut CD, was released. He received recognition as the Most Promising Artist of the Year in 1996 after being nominated in five categories for the renowned Na Hoku Hano Hano awards.

He published Mother of the Sea two years later, in 1998, and it received three additional Na Hoku Hano Hano award nominations the following year. Darren Benitez has proven the Na Hoku Hano Hano judges were correct by fulfilling the promise they observed in those early performances, despite a lengthy 10-year gap from recording.

His most recent album, Dear Mama, captures not only his enduring passion for music that he first experienced as a child but also his ever-deepening appreciation for it.
