According to California Highway Patrol, a Riverside County deputy and his daughter were murdered in a DUI collision, and the accused driver has been detained on suspicion of two counts of homicide as well as other offenses. What happened to Daniel Jacks Jr. and Hannah Jacks?

In crash in the Pass Area on Sunday, correctional deputy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and his daughter were killed. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash had previously been convicted of DUI.

The California Highway Patrol reported that Correctional Cpl. Daniel Jacks Jr., 45, of San Jacinto, and his daughter Hannah Jacks, 19, died at the site of the collision that occurred at around 8:57 p.m. on Gilman Springs Road, east of Bridge Street.

According to the CHP, the corporal and his daughter were travelling east on Gilman Springs in a Honda Insight when a westbound Chevrolet Silverado drove over the split roadway and struck the family head-on.

According to CHP Officer Jason Montez, Bales was operating a westbound Chevrolet Silverado with a passenger in the front seat when Jacks’s Honda Insight approached from the other direction on the two-lane corridor where there is neither a barrier establishing a center median nor double yellow lines.

Moreno Valley resident Scott Brandon Bales, 47, operated the Chevy. According to the CHP, he and his passenger, a 45-year-old Moreno Valley male, suffered serious injuries in the collision and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“Mr. Bales was determined to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the crash and arrested for two counts of homicide, as well as driving under the influence and causing injury to his passenger,” according to Monday’s CHP report.

After the incident, they were rushed to the hospital to receive medical attention for his wounds.
Bales was also taken to the hospital for treatment following the collision.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the violent encounter was thought to have happened on Sunday night just before 9 o’clock close to the intersection of Gilman Springs Road and Bridge Street (CHP).At the scene where the bodies were discovered, it was found that two people had died.

Suspect Bales

Moreno Valley resident Scott Bales, 47, was detained on suspicion of second-degree murder, DUI, and other felonies after allegedly causing the collision in which he suffered serious injuries.

Bales’ pickup allegedly  “crossed over the divided highway and traveled into the eastbound traffic lane,” according to Montez.

According to documents from the jail, Bales was being held without bond at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. According to court records, Bales has three past DUI convictions in Riverside County.

Who is Daniel Jacks Jr?

According to the organization, Corporal Jacks started working for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on September 2, 2008. After completing the training, he was given a job at the jail in Indio. He was moved to the Palm Desert Station in May 2014, and then back to the Indio prison facility in 2015.

According to the sheriff’s office, Jacks received a promotion to the rank of correctional corporal in March 2022 and most recently worked at the facility in Indio.

Brother Anthony, brother Tommy, wife Denay, son Brent, father Daniel Sr., and Corporal Jacks are the only surviving family members.

Who is Hannah Jacks?

Hannah’s identity was not made public by the sheriff’s office, but according to her Facebook page, she taught dance and musical theatre at The Dancers’ Studio in Hemet. She posted pictures of herself and her young dance students on March 28.

“Cherishing these precious backstage moments before my girls grow up,” she wrote.

A student of Jacks’ posted, “The world has lost a beautiful soul. I spent most of my dance years learning and growing up with you & I will hold these memories close to my heart.”

CHP statement regarding drunk & drive

The CHP released a statement regarding drunk driving.

“The CHP would like to remind everyone that DUI-related crashes are not accidents and are completely preventable,” the agency said. “It is easier than ever to find a safe ride home if your outing includes alcohol. Use a rideshare company, take public transportation, or designate a sober driver.”
