Claude Noel, a former professional boxer from Trinidad and Tobago, has passed away. According to his family, Noel, 74 passed suddenly on Sunday at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
A video showing the nation’s first world title boxing champion writhing on the ground and pleading for assistance was shared on social media last month.
Noel, an amputee, could be heard in the two minutes, 54-second video asking for his stick. However, his family members stated that the video was taken at Noel’s Malabar home a year prior by his carer and sent to his wife and family back home.
Noel had received a Special Achievers’ Grant from the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services for several years, but the ministry interfered. Noel received the Senior Citizens’ Pension as well, according to the ministry.
The ministry made contact with Noel’s family in order to help him even further. The Claude Noel Highway in Tobago was named in honor of Noel when he received the Chaconia Gold Medal in 1982. When Noel defeated Mexican Rodolfo Gonzalez in 1981, he became the nation’s first lightweight world champion.

Who was Claude Noel?
Former Tobagonian professional boxer Claude Noel was born in Trinidad. Before turning to boxing in 1973, Noel was peddling mangoes and other exotic fruits while he was just a teenager.
Boxing Career
On November 13, 1973, Noel made his professional debut in Port-of-Spain against Art de Freitas, winning through knockout in the second round.
Noel successfully contested his first title, the Trinidad & Tobago Lightweight title, following a run of four victories. Fitzroy Guisseppi, Noel’s opponent, was unable to continue, so the fight, which was set to go fifteen rounds, was terminated in the tenth round.
On June 16, 1979, Noel made his first attempt to win a portion of the world championship. Noel had amassed a record of 19 victories and just 2 defeats, both coming at the hands of Lennox Blackmoore through technical knockout in the tenth round.
The WBA championship that Roberto Durán just vacated was being contested by Noel and his opponent, Venezuelan Ernesto Espana. Espana knocked down Noel in the opening round, giving the fight a terrible start for Noel.
He was knocked down once more in the ninth round, but he was able to get back up. He then failed to beat the referee’s count for the third knockdown, which halted the fight in the thirteenth.
WBA championship
On September 12, 1981, two years after his initial challenge, Noel successfully defended his WBA championship. Mexican boxer Rodolfo Gonzalez was the opponent for the fight, which took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the United States.
Despite having a good opening, Noel had to endure the Mexican’s powerful finish. The final scores were 145-140, 145-141, and 144-141 in favor of Noel after a lengthy contest.
On December 5, 1981, Noel faced up with American challenger and last-minute replacement Arturo Frias in his maiden title defense. In the eighth round of the contest, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, Frias finished off Noel.
Despite never again competing for a world championship, Noel was successful in capturing and twice successfully defending the Commonwealth Lightweight title.
After losing his final world title match, Noel fought 10 more times, losing six of them, including one to legendary Nicaraguan Alexis Arguello. On November 2, 1984, Noel fought for the last time. He was defeated by Graeme Brooke and forfeited his Commonwealth title.
