Police in Merseyside has opened a murder inquiry after a lady was fatally stabbed.

On Monday night, just after 8 o’clock, a woman in her 50s was discovered with a knife wound to the chest at the Brambles pub on Cherryfield Drive.

She was taken urgently to the hospital, where she passed away shortly after. In the event, a man in his 30s was also stabbed.

CCTV, witness, and forensic inquiries have all been made as part of the inquiry. A search has been conducted at the scene later this morning.

Locals have identified the grandmother who was killed with a knife as she attempted to “break up a quarrel” between two guys behind a Kirkby pub.

Locally, the woman is now known as Kirkby nan Karen Dempsey.

According to a local, Karen attempted to break up a fight between two men on the service road behind the Brambles pub before she passed away.

He stated: “The Brambles pub requested the males to leave because they were fighting there.

They both went to the back of the bar and began to argue.

When Karen stepped outside to intervene in the brawl, she was stabbed.”

Police remain at the scene diverting people and motorists. Buses are also being diverted due to the police cordon.

Within the cordon no businesses are open, this included Lloyd’s Bank. Farmfoods, just outside of the police tape, is still open

At around 8.10 p.m. on Monday, Cherryfield Drive in Kirkby received a call from the emergency services reporting a dispute.

They discovered a woman in her 50s with a chest wound at the scene in the parking lot.

She was taken urgently to the hospital, where she passed away shortly after.

Locally, the woman is now known as Kirkby nan Karen Dempsey.

According to a local, Karen attempted to break up a fight between two men on the service road behind the Brambles pub before she passed away.

He stated: “The Brambles pub requested the males to leave because they were fighting there.

They both went to the back of the bar and began to argue.

When Karen stepped outside to intervene in the brawl, she was stabbed.”

Karen, he claimed, was a “nice person” who had previously worked at the Brambles pub.

He claimed Karen was a supporter of Liverpool FC who had entered the bar to watch the Manchester United game last night.

She was devoted to her grandchildren, he said.

Karen has received tributes on social media.

One said, “I’m very sorry to learn today of such a lovely woman taken from us too soon, R.I.P.

According to police, the woman’s family has been notified.

Another victim, a 30-year-old guy, had his arm and body punctured.

He was transferred to a hospital so that his wounds could be attended to.

Following his self-incrimination, detectives have taken a 32-year-old man into custody on suspicion of murder.

A second man, 38, was taken into custody nearby on s18 and assault suspicions.

CCTV, witness, and forensic inquiries have all been made as part of the inquiry.

This morning’s search has been held at the scene.

“We are currently in the very early phases of an inquiry as we seek to identify what has taken place,” said Detective Inspector Laura Lamping.

We think there was a fight that started inside the building and spilled outdoors.

“Unfortunately, a woman who was stabbed died as a result of her injuries. Although we currently have two persons in prison, our investigations continue.

People’s reactions to this incident

Witnesses claim there was a “ruckus in the street” as they heard “shouting and fighting” at the time of the stabbing.

Police have confirmed that there was an “altercation” which started inside the Brambles pub, before the woman was stabbed outside, near the car park.

One woman at the scene told ECHO reporter Aaliyah Rugg: “It’s enough to scare you everything going on lately, but you’ve got to keep going.” She added that it’s “awful news” and the death will have “ripples” of impact within the community.

Another person, passing the scene, said: “Enough is enough. This devastation in our communities has to end.”

They added: “There are just no words.”

A shopper said: “The poor woman has had her life ripped away from her.”
