The Officers Mistakenly Shot The Little Boy Dead When They Were Chasing Drug Dealers.

Ivan Omhonria, a two-year-old boy, was shot dead on Thursday during an (NDLEA) raid on a known drug den in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Stray bullets terminating innocent young souls in the presence of their parents is a bitter pill to swallow. We’re so sorry for your loss.

We will pray that the deceased’s soul may rest in peace, that the other baby may recover quickly, and that the parents will have the strength to cope with the loss.

We know that over time the pain may look like it’s faded and life has returned to normal. But behind that the memories and grief will last a lifetime.

Let’s see What happened to Ivan and Eromonsele Omhonria and the tragic incident in detail.

Asaba delta state shooting: Explained

A tragic event reportedly occurred in Delta State where stray bullets fired by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) personnel killed a two-year-old toddler and wounded his brother.

Ivan Omhonria, age 2, was shot and killed on Thursday during a raid by members of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a known drug den in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Eromonsele, his younger sibling, was also injured by a gunshot and is currently struggling for air at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba.

“The men of NDLEA were chasing some boys who they claimed were into drugs and started shooting sporadically in the process,” the eyewitness claimed. Little Onose was a victim of this terrible tragedy while he was being picked up from school by his parents.

According to local sources, the victims were struck by stray gunfire while they were in their mother’s shop after school. Ivan was shot in the belly, while Eromonsele was allegedly struck in the eye by a stray bullet.

The most terrible part of the story is that young Onose was supposed to graduate from pre-nursery school on Tuesday of the next week before he was slain.

Ivan couldn’t endure it, the villagers said, adding that the victims were brought to the FMC for surgery.

NDLEA State Commandant’s statement on the incident

NDLEA State Commandant, Mr John Tunde, confirmed the incident. He insisted that his officers did not intentionally shoot at the children.

“We can’t be that unprofessional to open fire on a shop,” he said.

Tunde explained that his men were attempting to stop a suspicious car that was trying to escape the scene, and one of the officers was run over.

“In attempts to demobilize the car, our men shot at it. What we cannot tell now is whether the children were inside the car at the time of the shooting,” he said.

“Our man, who was run over by the car, is currently being treated at the Central Hospital in Ogwashi-Uku. We tried to stop the car, but he managed to get away.

“I can therefore attest to the fact that it took place, but the story I have given you is accurate. We can’t possibly be that irresponsible as to fire on a store. With the child’s father, I spent the night at the hospital.

Tunde expressed his condolences and stated that he had visited the hospital with the father of the child. We are investigating it. Meanwhile, activist Comrade Isreal Joe said a successful operation had been carried out on the injured sibling.

Israel Ojie human rights activist stated,

Israel Ojie, a human rights activist located in Delta State, spoke out about the terrible situation and denounced it while accusing individuals from the drug agency of extortion.

“We call on the authorities of the said body to get into investigations and unravel circumstances that led to the death of this young boy and injury to his younger brother. I have contacted our Comrades in Asaba to meet up with the parents right now at FMC where the younger brother is been treated and also make a report to the police for proper documentation.”

The state commissioner of police, CP Wale Abass has ordered the immediate transfer of the case from the GRA police station to the police headquarters.
