We received the news of Robert “Bertie” Dunstan’s passing at his home in Moana yesterday evening with the utmost grief. Rob was a man who lived in South Australia and dedicated his life to live music.
Rob has shared his vast knowledge of live music with us since we first opened The Gov, advising us on which acts to book and having a significant impact on the growth of our Venue.
His in-depth interviews and reviews while serving as editor of Rip It Up informed us all. He remembered tour dates, lineups, audience attendance, and set lists of essentially every band to tour to Adelaide.
Who was Robert Dunstan?
Robert had an encyclopedic knowledge of music and throughout the years had interviews with every major musician in the world.
South Australia’s music has benefited greatly from Robert’s efforts to promote local performers. Robert Dunstan has devoted the last 35 years to promoting live music in South Australia, whether it be regional, national, or worldwide.
Without Robert’s contributions, the music industry and the arts, in general, would suffer significantly because no other person or organization has covered the SA music industry to the extent that Robert has.
Robert’s efforts to support local artists have been essential to the development of music in South Australia, especially at a time when State and Federal funding for the arts is constrained. He has devoted many hours to supporting the music and cultural sectors.

A print publication with an emphasis on music and the arts in general, BSide Magazine was launched in Adelaide, South Australia, in August 2015.
A website and Facebook page were also created at the same time. Robert Dunstan, who has nearly 30 years of experience in the music business, is the editor of BSide Magazine.
It was a fortnightly online publication that features interviews with visiting and local musicians, frequent film reviews and interviews, book and CD reviews, and more.
A working musician and studio engineer with years of experience in the music industry, Ian Messenger, has recently joined BSide Magazine as a partner and writer. BSide Magazine also has a very active Facebook presence with daily articles.

It was confirmed that Robert passed away at his home in Moana yesterday evening. At the time of writing, no cause of death has been made public. Additionally, neither his family members nor any web reports disclosed any illness history of Robert Dunstan.
