Who was Jeromy Sullivan?

For almost ten years, Jeromy Sullivan, an enrolled member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, has held an elected position on the Tribal Council. He first served as a councilman for four years until taking over as tribal chairman in 2010.

Jeromy served as the Tribe’s information technology manager prior to being chosen for Tribal Council. He has also worked as a commercial Geoduck Harvester for about 20 years.

This understanding of natural resources has aided in his attention on stewardship issues that directly impact treaty rights, such as the protection and restoration of Port Gamble Bay, which is a portion of the Tribe’s ancient land.

He has also put a lot of effort into ensuring the Tribe’s economic prosperity, introducing fresh initiatives that help the Tribe more effectively accomplish its economic objectives.

A federally recognized indigenous nation is the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, formerly known as the Nux Sklai Yem, or Strong People.

The Treaty of Point No Point, which was signed in 1855 by representatives of the S’Klallam, Chimakum, and Skokomish tribes and the United States, opened up a significant portion of the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas for non-Native settlement.

The S’Klallam Tribe co-manages the state’s salmon stock with the state and is a member of the Point No Point Treaty Council.

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation, which is situated on the Kitsap Peninsula’s northernmost point, was formed in the late 1930s.

There are roughly 1,200 people in the Tribe. Children and family services, courts, cultural resources, education, health, housing, land planning, natural resources, public safety, and utilities are just a few of the services provided by tribal governments.

The Tribe’s other businesses include Gliding Eagle Marketplace, Heronswood Garden, and The Point Casino & Hotel.

Chris Tom, the vice chairman of the council, and the other members issued a press release to announce the heartbreaking news.

The statement read:

“It is with the deepest regret and sorrow that we must announce the passing of Our Chairman Jeromy Sullivan after a short illness. He was 50.

For the past few weeks, Jeromy had been hospitalized and was undergoing treatment. While he had been slowly improving, unfortunately, his condition deteriorated quickly over the last couple of days. On Friday night, he passed away surrounded by the love of his family.

Jeromy is the son of Dianna Purser and Melvin (Poe) Sullivan. He is also survived by his wife, Toni; their two children, Samantha and Jacob; and his brothers, Chad and Corey. Passed on before him are his grandparents: Aaron Purser, Geraldine Heimann, and Frank and Cyrene (Dolly) Sullivan.

His family appreciates everyone who visited Jeromy and sent their thoughts and prayers for his recovery. We ask that you please remain respectful of their privacy and needs during this difficult time.

Information on services will be made available as soon as possible.

Tribal offices will be closed on Monday, July 3 as we mourn the passing of our beloved Chairman, community member, and friend.
