Who was Rameer Tawasil?
Rameer Tawasil was a famous painter who was born in 1969. Tawasil, a native of Sulu, experienced the height of the Moro uprising during the martial law era.
He was only five years old in 1974 when he and his family fled Sulu for the safety of Zamboanga City amid falling bombs that wiped out the whole downtown area of Jolo, the province capital.
Tawasil first became interested in Tausug art when he assisted his maternal grandmother in creating patterns for her embroidered designs for Tausug “Habul Tiyahian” or “patadjung,” which are popular among Tausug ladies.
Together with the late Abdulmari Imao, who was recognized as the National Artist for Sculpture in 2006, he honed his abilities and took part in several group art shows.
Tawasil was urged by Imao to keep researching the vibrant Tausug culture that exists throughout Mindanao, including the Sulu archipelago, and to display his findings in public.
He studied architecture from 1987 to 1992 at the Western Mindanao State University. Tawasil also finished high school at the Hadji Butu School of Arts and Trades, where Imao had previously completed his education.
Tawasil developed his craft as a result of this mentorship. Later, he discovered how to expand his audience as well.
Awards and Honours
Tawasil continued to portray the rich culture of the Tausugs and Badjaos as his expertise of his chosen art form advanced.
He continued by introducing his own artistic signature, which reflects his perception of his neighbourhood. Tawasil has participated in around 60 art exhibitions domestically and abroad, including those in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Sweden, Malaysia, Singapore, and Italy.
A recipient of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Award, Tawasil also got the Asian International Gold Award Myanmar, the Zamboanga Hermosa Recognition Award in the Culture and the Arts Category, and the 2015 Award of Commendation from the City Council of Zamboanga for taking home the Grand Prize.
In 2003, he was listed as one of the Top 19 visual artists, and was awarded at the National Traveling Art Grant Exhibition by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.
He received Zamboanga Hermosa Recognition Award for Culture and the Arts in 2003. Solo Exhibitions of Rameer were potrayed in Sihnag, Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City, Philippines Tawasil, Garden Orchid Hotel, Philippines’ Zamboanga City.
