What happened to K-9 Ruger?
One of the long-serving K9s of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has died, the agency has reported. K9 Ruger died with his loved ones by his side, according to an LCSO Facebook post.
Until Ruger retired in 2019, he had worked for the LCSO since 2010. Sergeant Dan Scowden, who died in November 2020, was his partner while they were both serving.
According to the LCSO, Ruger supported thousands of searches for evading suspects, bomb searches, and public demonstrations.
The Lee County Rotary Club awarded K9 Ruger the K-9 Officer of the Year title. Ruger was honored for his service after suffering a serious injury, according to LCSO.
After his retirement, Ruger moved in with Daysi Castillo, a purchasing agent. Until his passing, he shared a home with her.
