Who are Eric James Williams and Latavia Tay McGee?
Two of the four Americans abducted at gunpoint in Matamoros, Mexico on March 3 were discovered dead. Fortunately, the two other people were rescued, according to Mexican and US officials on Tuesday.
The surviving Americans have been named Latavia “Tay” McGee and Eric James Williams by Mexico’s security secretary.
The other two Americans have been named Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodard, according to the reports. Their remains will be returned, once Mexico has completed its forensic investigation.
Américo Villarreal, the governor of Tamaulipas, reported that only one of the two surviving Americans sustained injuries.
FBI also confirmed that one of the surviving victims suffers serious injuries and was taken to a U.S. hospital for treatment.
In a tweet posted Tuesday afternoon, the Tamaulipas attorney general confirmed that federal and state officials escorted the two remaining Americans to an international bridge at the U.S.-Mexico border.
What happened to Eric James Williams and Latavia Tay McGee?
Williams, McGee, Zindell Brown, and McGee’s cousin Shaeed Woodard, the four Americans, arrived Friday morning in Matamoros, Mexico, which is located in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas just south of Brownsville, Texas.
The passengers of the car were shot shortly after entering Mexico, according to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. In a white minivan, the Americans had been moving along.
The four American citizens were herded into another car by the gunmen, according to the embassy. At a press briefing, Tamaulipas’ attorney general, Irving Barrios, said there was no direct attack on Americans. It “seems to be that it was a misunderstanding,” Barrios said.
According to a source familiar with the investigation, Mexican detectives think the kidnappers may have mistakenly thought the Americans were rival human traffickers.
The two surviving Americans, Eric James Williams and Latavia Tay McGee, who was involved in a deadly kidnapping in Matamoros, have been transported to a Brownsville hospital for treatment, according to authorities.
Mexican authorities reported on Tuesday that Ms. McGee and Mr. Williams have been returned to US officials at the Mexican border with Brownsville, Texas.
While Mr. Williams sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg, he is anticipated to make a full recovery. Ms. McGee was uninjured.
