According to reliable sources, Okawa was taken to the hospital after being discovered in a cardiac arrest in the early hours of Monday at his residence in the Minato Ward of the Japanese capital. Okawa was taken to the hospital on February 28, 2023, after passing out in his Minato, Tokyo, home. At the age of 66, he passed away on March 2. Who was Ryuho Okawa?

Ryuho Okawa was the CEO and founder of the Happy Science religious organization and the Happiness Realization Party in Japan. As a child, Okawa believed in the existence of spirits and souls, and a world beyond death, and both of his parents believed in God and the Buddha. Okawa also said that his family was religious. Okawa was a devout man, yet he was not particularly religious.

Okawa desired a career in academia or diplomacy. He desired to advance his ideas in academics or to enhance his perspective on life by exposure to many cultures while serving as a diplomat. He began studying until late at night as a result of this possibility and rose to the top of his class. He excelled at English in particular. He was obese, weighing 60 kg at 143 cm in height. Okawa was a motivated student in his secondary education. He practiced kendo, played tennis, and went fishing. He participated in extracurricular activities at school and served as the student union’s president and newspaper editor.

Happy Science Religious Group

Okawa hired four employees when he started the first Happy Science office on October 6th, 1986 in Suginami, Tokyo. The original name of Happy Science was Jinsei no Daigaku-in: Kofuku-no-Kagaku (“Happy Science, The Postgraduate School of Human Life”). The inspiration for the name “幸福の科学” is attributed to Okawa, who claimed to have received it from Nichiren’s spirit; the specifics were made public in 1985 in Okawa’s debut book, Nichiren no reigen. The club initially identified itself as a “research group on human happiness” and was made up of Okawa’s friends and acquaintances who were readers and supporters of his spiritual writings. It’s possible that the group had ulterior plans to become recognized as a religious institution.

Happy Science was granted “religious juridical person” (, shky-hjin) status by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on March 7, 1991, under the Religious Companies Law. Its name was therefore abbreviated to Kofuku-no-Kagaku (, Kfuku-no-Kagaku). Because the government recognized the organization, it was able to gradually expand by adding new members from the broader Japanese populace. In that year, Happy Science began holding extensive celebrations. One of these events was Okawa’s “Birthday Festival” (, Goseitan-sai), which took place on July 15, 1991, just a few days after Okawa turned 35. In the event, Okawa performed in front of 50,000 spectators at Tokyo Dome, including members of the media.

Okawa announced the establishment of Happy Science’s political arm, the Happiness Realization Party (HRP). The party’s Declaration (Kfuku Jitsugent sengen) was delivered by Okawa in April 2009. Jikid Aeba served as the party’s first official head when it was initially constituted on May 23, 2009. The party was established ahead of the 30 August 2009 Japanese general election. The party identifies as conservative, populist, and religious. The party doesn’t specifically mention Happy Science’s philosophical beliefs.

The “Buddha of Mahayana,” also known as “El Cantare,” the Grand Spirit of the Terrestrial Spirit Group, claimed to have at least 1.5 million disciples as of this point. Prior to the Buddha and Okawa, El Cantare was shown to have undergone a number of reincarnations.

His Books

Okawa is a prolific writer. He was publishing 20 to 30 volumes a year by the early 1990s. By 2004, he is claimed to have written more than 300 novels. Okawa published a lot of best-selling books. Almost a million copies of several of Okawa’s books were sold. The Laws of the Sun, the main work of Okawa, has sold the most copies—ten million as of January 2000.

According to Happy Science, its books had sold more than 50 million copies globally by 1997. The philosophy of Happy Science has been extensively covered in the literature. They are all there to learn “The Dharma of the Right Mind,” the founding text of Happy Science, according to Okawa. Three categories of publications are available from Okawa. One example is the publication of spiritual messages obtained by Okawa through conversations with numerous spirits. The second category consists of transcripts of Okawa’s seminars and lectures. The writings of Okawa are the third. Other authors have also contributed. Kyoko, Okawa’s wife, wrote works primarily for female readers. High-ranking disciples have created some titles. Additional materials, such as books, journals, comics, and textbooks, are also published under the Happy Science moniker or the Public Relations Division of the company.

Over 500 publications have purportedly been released by Okawa since the beginning of Happy Science, the majority of which are transcriptions of his videotaped lectures. The Terrifying Revelations of Nostradamus, Hermes – Winds of Love, The Rebirth of Buddha, The Mystical Laws, The Last Judgement, The Rules of the Universe, I’m Fine My Angel, The Earth We Live In, and Daybreak is a few of the 15 movies that are based on his teachings.

Funeral plans for Ryuho Okawa will be publicly disclosed by family members.  One of the worst things anyone can go through in life is losing a loved one.
