Who was Davis Causey?
American guitarist Davis Causey was a member of the Southern rock group Sea Level. Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe, both ex-members of The Allman Brothers Band, founded Sea Level in 1976. Other talented musicians including Jimmy Nalls, Lamar Williams, and Randall Bramblett also joined the group.
In the late 1970s, Davis Causey joined the group and contributed to several of their albums, such as “On the Edge” (1978), “Long Walk on a Short Pier” (1979), and “Ball Room” (1980). Causey’s guitar playing was a crucial component of Sea Level’s sound, which combined rock, jazz, and funk influences into a distinct and dynamic style.
Musical Career:
When Davis Causey was only 10 years old, he began his long and successful career with a few strums of his ukulele.
His success knows no bounds as seen by his participation in Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye’s projects as well as his compositions for Bonnie Raitt and the Carny soundtrack.

Just heard that Davis Causey has passed away. Davis was a long-time Cayamo musician, playing for Shawn Mullins’ band and sitting in with countless others. I don’t know the circumstances of his death — only that he was playing with Randall Bramblett at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur GA just two weeks ago.

I was fortunate enough to hear Davis live on several occasions. I’ve always admired his tasteful phrasing and his ability to meld seamlessly into whatever he was playing with whomever.
One misty night in particular stands out- Randall was playing to an intimate crowd in Watkinsville. The set was heavy with southern shuffles (not a bad thing) when the Bramblett changed it up with “Driftin’ into a Woman’s Arms.” Causey’s extended slide solo absolutely sent me tripping to another place! An already wonderful night was ethereal from then on.

Too many fun memories, stories, and decades of great times playing music with this guy…so very saddened to hear this news that our friend Davis Causey passed. As far as I know he coined the phrase “never played the song the same way once!” His creative talents as a guitarist and songwriter plus his one of a kind personality excelled throughout the many years of knowing, playing in bands and recording together. I cherish the memories and music we shared…RIP brother Davis.
