COUNTY OF SANTA CRUZ – According to county officials, a volunteer fireman recruit from Santa Cruz County passed away during a training session over the weekend. At the Ben Lomond Training Center on Sunday, a volunteer fireman recruit passed away while participating in a training exercise.
According to a county press statement, the individual, identified as Santa Cruz resident Daniel Lamothe, 38, experienced medical difficulty throughout the training session. He received immediate medical care from experienced experts at the scene, but he was never brought back to life.
More than 60 fire and law enforcement personnel saluted as the fire truck and coroner vehicle passed by the sheriff’s office area on Soquel Avenue on Sunday afternoon. The reason for death is being looked into by the sheriff’s office.

With a heavy heart, the County of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz County Fire Department announce the death of a volunteer recruit during weekend training exercises. On Sunday, Feb. 19, Daniel Lamothe, 38, of Santa Cruz, became medically distressed during a joint firefighter academy training session at Ben Lomond Training Center.
“We mourn the passing of one of our brethren,” County Fire Chief Nate Armstrong said:
“Daniel wanted to be a firefighter so that he could give back to the community where he was raised and in which he lived. His commitment to public service serves as a model for us all. We grieve along with his friends and family for this sudden and tragic loss.”
He received immediate medical attention from trained medical personnel on the scene, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. To confirm his cause of death, an autopsy is performed. During the winter, County Fire offers unincorporated regions of the County services such as wildland and structural fire protection, emergency medical care, fire prevention, fire marshall, and community education.
For these services, the County has a contract with CAL FIRE. And the CAL FIRE San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit Chief serves as the Santa Cruz County Fire Chief.
Five devoted volunteer fire companies make up County Fire, which helps to deliver high-quality fire protection and emergency response services.

So incredibly sad to hear about the passing of our former bassist and co-founder, Dan “Mothman” Lamothe. There are no words to describe the flood of emotions right now. Life is already so short, but Dan went way too soon.
He was a close friend for many many years and we went through a lot together. I will always remember him as the 16-year-old psychobilly kid I met at a Tiger Army shows at the Santa Cruz Vets Hall. I asked him if he wanted to start a band with me and a few years later we got to share the stage with them.
