“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Herbst, director of Medi Response KZN. On behalf of the entire team at Medi Response, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
The loss of Paul is a tremendous blow to the community, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. As we mourn his passing, it is important to remember the incredible contributions that he made and the countless lives that he touched along the way.

He was a regular on Radio Life & Style, providing the community with important updates and reliable information whenever disaster struck on the North Coast and elsewhere, from the KZN riots in 2021 and floods in 2022 to reports from the scenes of global disasters like the hurricane-ravaged Beira in Mozambique and the recent earthquakes in Turkey.
Herbst travelled to help Turkey and Syria in the wake of the devastating earthquake that left thousands of people dead or missing as part of the Medi Response team working under the Gift of The Givers banner.
Imtiaz Sooliman, the director of Gift of the Givers, has expressed his sincere sympathies to Paul Herbst’s family.
Sooliman said: “Gift of the Givers sends its sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Paul Herbst who passed on, on Monday night. On arrival he shook my hand, I could see the sparkle in his eyes and the happiness all over his face, he was beaming and he said ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you’. He went on to say that this was an opportunity of a lifetime, something he had always been waiting for, (saying) ‘I had a chance to meet people, to serve, to gain experience and once again thank you’.”
The team, together with other South African SAR professionals, returned to South Africa on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement released by Medi Response on Sunday.
