Joe Toole, a beloved guitarist for “The Phantoms” and “Brokenjoe,” passed away.

Obituary written by Joe Toole’s Wife Pamela:

“It is with profound heartache that I announce the passing of my beloved husband and sweetheart Joe Toole. On the evening of February 1,2023 my darling Joe left this world peacefully wrapped in my arms and surrounded with love.”

She conveyed her sincere gratitude to the Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital Palliative Unit personnel for their excellent care given to Joe while he was there. She also sent special thanks to Benjamin Mol and the families of the Horseshoe Tavern, Lee’s Palace, and B-Side Barbers. She also expressed gratitude to everyone who visited Joe in the hospital and sent texts, phone calls, and visits. Joe’s family and friends will treasure his memory and he will be sorely missed.

Musician Jerome Godboo wrote a heart touching note,

“Joe Toole has passed away and now it’s time to fondly remember him.

He died peacefully in bed with his wife Pamela singing him songs that they both had learnt & adored.

Joe had some really great qualities as a man and remained true to his own sense of humor, style and character.

I was lucky that Joe took me on in an older brother type way , which means that he encouraged me and guided me to discover great musicians but he was way too wild for me to hang around with!

I’m inviting you to join me in remembering him and sending him all the good wishes that we have in our hearts.,”

He was singing his favorite songs with his wife, Pamela, next to him at the moment he was declared dead. His many great qualities included the fact that he never compromised his sense of humor, his sense of fashion, or his character. His family members are grieved by his passing and recall how bravely he battled to remain with them.

Longtime bartender Joe Toole, who worked at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern and Lees Palace, had a stroke lately. Toole was a part of the bands Brokenjoe and The Phantoms. It was discovered that Joe had a stage 4 aggressive form of lung cancer throughout his treatment. He was unable to carry on without taking painkillers since the metastasis had spread to other parts of his body, including his vertebrae, which was compressing his spine and elevating his pain threshold to an intolerable degree.

Unfortunately, He passed away after he battled stage 4 lung cancer.

Who was Joe Toole?

Over the course of several decades, Joe, a native of New Brunswick, significantly influenced Toronto’s musical scene. His career has been filled with many memorable musical moments, from trading licks on stage with Jeff Healey while his band the Phantoms was performing to performing every Tuesday at Grossman’s Tavern with his old-timey blues band Brokenjoe.

For a very long period, Joe served drinks at the Lees Palace. He enjoyed talking about his experiences as a touring musician, giving advice and warnings to aspiring artists. Since Joe and his wife Pamela spent a significant amount of time in Toronto, they view the city’s music community as an extension of their family.

Mark Crissinger wrote,

“The mighty Joe Toole of The Phantoms and BrokenJoe has passed. He was a one-of-a-kind guy and an inspiration to me and many young rocknrollers in Toronto. We were roommates for awhile and he taught me to appreciate cats in a home. He was my favorite bartender too. When I moved out west I’d always visit him at the Horseshoe when I was in town. I’d walk in the bar and say “it’s all your fault!” And he’d say “don’t blame me for your dumbass decisions, whatcha drinking?” He really was a great guy. RIP Joe. You will be missed.”

One of the worst things anyone can go through in life is losing a loved one. Any journey must have a destination at the end. The person’s time on earth has regrettably come to an end now that they have died.
