Zaria Hunter’s journey
Hunter began her sophomore year in agriculture sciences with a pre-veterinary medicine specialization last spring. Hunter was first excited, but her excitement was short-lived when she started to suffer from severe headaches frequently. She didn’t consider her headaches to be a severe health concern, and she thought some medication would ultimately make them go away. She had no intention of turning 20 while being treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis while she was just 19 years old.
After receiving a rare cancer diagnosis, Hunter’s physique began to rapidly elevate. When the cancer was confirmed to be in stage 4 in April 2021, her family learned that many parts of her body had already been affected.
Hunter shared, according to the news release sent to a Blavity,
“It was in my liver, brain, lungs, spine, and hip bone.”
The fierce struggle for her life continued. Hunter experienced numerous difficult times and multiple comas, one of which lasted for four days, during her five-month stay at St. Jude.
She expressed,
“That’s when things were getting rough.”
Hunter once underwent a major weight loss; at 5-foot-4 in height, she weighed barely 85 pounds. Even though she was weak and had lost her ability to walk, she was determined to succeed. In addition, Zaria underwent surgery to have a port inserted in her chest as well as seven rounds of intravenous chemotherapy.
Hunter underwent daily chemotherapy after being discharged from St. Jude after five months. With a minor amount of lung cancer, Hunter returned to Nashville this semester. She returns to TSU this semester to complete her veterinary degree and proudly visits St. Jude once a month for a checkup. Hunter has admirable enthusiasm.
Hunter was incredibly dedicated, and her strength was inspiring. Coworkers and teachers claim that despite her struggle with the illness and how ill she became, Hunter never lost her grin or her optimistic attitude.
