Who is Duangpetch Promthep?

One of the 12 boys who were rescued in 2018 from a Thai cave, Duangpetch Promthep, passed away in Britain.

When he was 17 years old, he joined at the Brooke House College Football Academy in Leicestershire. The Thai boys’ football team, led by Promthep, spent two weeks trapped in a cave in the Chiang Rai area along with their coach.

His mother alerted the team at the Wat Doi Wao temple in Chiang Rai, where he was raised. His cave rescue team teammates who are also on social media have posted the news.

On Wednesday, the temple conveyed condolences to Promthep, also known as Dom, on Facebook.

The message, which was accompanied by images of the football team with monks, added,

“May Dom’s soul rest in peace.”

On Facebook, the Zico Foundation, a Thai charity that had assisted Promthep in obtaining a scholarship to study in England, also posted its sympathies.

“Chico Foundation would like to express its condolences and condolence for the passing away of Little Dom Duangphet Phromthep, a student of Chico Foundation.”

Thailand Cave rescue story

Promthep was a member of the Wild Boars football squad, known in Thai as Moo Pa, which entered the Tham Luang cave on June 23, 2018, only to become trapped by oncoming floodwaters.

The dramatic international news story of the Thai cave rescue captivated people’s attention all around the world. The incident started on June 23, when their coach and 12 players from a local soccer team got stuck in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non-cave. The boys, who ranged in age from 11 to 16, entered the cave as part of an after-school excursion, but severe rains blocked their way out when the tunnel flooded. Rescue teams from all over the world worked nonstop for the following nine days to find and free the trapped boys.

In 2018, a large group of rescuers fought valiantly to extract the children from the Tham Luang caves.

Teams had to manoeuvre through perilous waters and complete darkness as they searched through a maze of tunnels and narrow corridors. The cave was in a remote, hilly area with little infrastructure and communication equipment, making the search all the more challenging. The world watched and awaited news of the boys’ rescue as the days passed. The news event drew attention from all over the world and dominated headlines in publications and newscasts on television.

Social media users carefully followed the tale, and on Twitter, the hashtag #ThaiCaveRescue became popular. After more than a week of uncertainty, the lads were finally found deep inside the cave on July 2, thanks to a team of British divers. At a distance of more than two miles from the cave mouth, the lads were discovered huddled together on a narrow, muddy ledge. Around 1,000 rescuers from all over the world worked to extract the lads from the cave over the course of the following three days. Stretchers and dive equipment were utilised during the risky voyage through constrained, water-filled channels that made up the rescue. In the end, all 12 boys and their coach were safely rescued, and on July 10, the last group emerged from the cave.

After a spectacular search and rescue operation that involved about 100 Thai and foreign divers, the boys and their coach were found two weeks later. They were saved while under the effects of the sedative ketamine. One of the team’s favourite destinations was Tham Luang, the fourth-largest cave system in Thailand.

The incredible account of the rescue gained worldwide attention, and many books and films were later produced to recount it, including a six-episode miniseries that was broadcast on Netflix last year.
