Turkey Earthquake:

According to officials, the disaster has resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 people and injuries of another 6,000. The first earthquake’s epicenter was at Gaziantep, which is located roughly 90 kilometers from the Syrian border. Millions of Syrian refugees have taken up residence in this area. Cairo was among the locations where the earthquake was felt.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement,

“I convey my best wishes to all our citizens who were affected by the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş and was felt in many parts of our country,”

“All our relevant units are on alert under the coordination of AFAD (the disaster and emergency management presidency).

“Our search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the areas affected by the earthquake. Our Ministry of Interior and Health, AFAD, Governorships and all other institutions started their work rapidly.

“We also coordinate the works initiated after the earthquake. We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage, and we continue our work.”

Images of roads being obliterated, heaps of rubble, and buildings that were four or five stories high are horrifying. The historical monument Gaziantep Castle, which had been standing for more than 2,000 years, was one of the structures that was destroyed. Additionally, a shopping center in the city of Diyarbakir fell, according to a BBC Turkish correspondent there.

Syria, a neighboring country, was also severely affected, while Egypt and Cyprus felt the tremor as well. Just yesterday, Hatayspor defeated Kasimpasa thanks to a goal from Atsu in the 97th minute.

While search and rescue teams from the Netherlands and Romania are already en route to Turkey, the European Union is sending teams to that country. The UK has announced that it will send 76 search and rescue personnel, tools, and dogs to Turkey.
