Who was Roy Ackland?

Roy Ackland was born on March 22, 1938, and was brought up in England until his father, a researcher and novelist, relocated the family to Texas. His knowledge of the weather during his time in the Air Force led him to television. Ackland began collaborating with “Positively Piedmont” feature photojournalist David Weatherly in 1987 after joining WGHP as a weatherman. They matched each other perfectly. The following year, the show moved from Murphy to Manteo, and its name changed to “Roy’s People.”

Over three decades, the two searched the state and the South seeking interesting people for WGHP listeners and other state television stations that broadcast the series. The two caught the best of the Tar Heel state sharing stories of regular people and major occurrences like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse’s journey out from the approaching sea in 1999. The “Roy’s People Crafts Fair,” which attracted thousands of visitors and raised tens of thousands of dollars for The Salvation Army, frequently took the place of the series, which frequently included his wife and three daughters. After Chad Tucker took over the popular “Roy’s People with Chad Tucker” series, Ackland retired to Eastern North Carolina in 2017.

  1. To the family and friends of Roy Ackland I offer up my prayers for you all and hope that God will fill your hearts with peace and his love during your time of grief for the loss of a well liked and respected man. I had the pleasure of meeting Roy way back in the mid 80’s when he used to bring his folkswagon van into the shop that I worked at to have repairs done to it. And I have seen him around at other places as well over the years like in my local AutoZone in Lexington NC. And each time that I saw him I always took the time to speak with him and he would always take the time to talk to me. I also used to enjoy watching Roy’s folks on fox8 where I have watched him for most of his time there. And though Chad Tucker does a decent job of doing Roy’s folks it’s just not the same without ol Roy. And I will miss him as well. And the way that he would always end his segment’s with Roy Ackland Fox8 News! May God’s grace and peace be with you all. Marty Motley (Fan)
