AMBER Alert rules

If a missing kid aged 17 or under meets certain requirements, police enforcement may issue an AMBER Alert. Law enforcement must initially have a plausible suspicion that an abduction took place. The law enforcement agency also thinks the youngster is in immediate danger of suffering a serious physical injury or passing away. Another need is that there must be enough specifics about the victim and the kidnapping to help in the child’s return, like a vehicle description or license plate number. The child’s name, along with other crucial date components, such as the flag for child abduction, are entered into the National Crime Information Center as part of the AMBER Alert. The AMBER Alert system was developed in 1996 and is now used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its name, America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, pays homage to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas, while riding her bicycle.
